Plastic Void Formers
NuPod®: creating planet-friendly and productive building sites, one slab at a time
An innovative alternative void former, NuPod® is environmentally friendly, ultimately reducing your carbon footprint.
Void Formers Designed for forward-thinking construction professionals
The NuPod® plastic void former system empowers every person in the building process to access the benefits of a seamless and sustainable concreting workflow. Today’s Homeowners, Architects and Engineers seek partners who care deeply about the quality, sustainability and longevity of the materials used throughout their building projects – even the ones they’ll never see.
By choosing NuPod® over traditional polystyrene void formers for your concrete slab, you’ll support every person in the process – from Architects and Engineers to Builders and Concreters – to reduce their carbon footprint, whilst also accessing the cost-saving and efficiency benefits of the physical properties of our unique, patented system to ensure everything is in situ for their project.
How NuPod® revolutionises the concreting workflow
Every aspect of NuPod®’s void formers for concrete slabs has been carefully chosen to maximise efficiency, from transportation to pouring the concrete slab. The result? A highly productive process and a quality slab – a solid foundation for structural integrity using the practical structure of plastic pods. As an alternative to polystyrene pods, NuPod void formers result in a solid foundation providing structural integrity.

Laying a quality foundation with NuPod®’s patented design
NuPod® supports concreters to lay quality slabs with exceptional speed and accuracy. Not only that, a NuPod® eco-friendly slab is deemed to conform with Australian Standards AS 2870-2011. Builders and Concreters alike choose NuPod® due to its innovative features, including:
- In-built bar chairs for rib reinforcement
- Angled wings to guide steel into place
- Interlocking spacers to create a guaranteed 110mm rib width
- Consistent openings that allow for seamless concrete flow.
NuPod void formers are the practical, simple, solution for use on expansive soils.
Why construction professionals choose NuPod® Void Formers
Controlled costs, preventing budget blowouts
NuPod® allows builders to accurately estimate the total cost of the slab, including reo steel and concrete volume.
Easy and cost-effective transportation
NuPod®’s stackable design reduces the freight required to deliver void formers by two-thirds.
Sustainable and planet-friendly solution
NuPod® is made from Australian recycled polypropylene, keeping waste out of landfill and building greener foundations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does NuPod meet the current Australian Standards AS 2870-2011?
Is NuPod more difficult to install than polystyrene void formers?
The installation of NuPod® is very similar to the principles of a standard polystyrene waffle raft slab.
What are some of the differences between NuPod and polystyrene void formers?
Polystyrene pods are placed creating a grid of 110mm wide ribs at 1200mm centres. NuPod is placed creating a grid of 110mm wide ribs with 1100mm centres. This results in a NuPod slab being stiffer (stronger) than a polystyrene pod slab.
Does NuPod cost more than polystyrene void formers?
NuPod is made from up to 100% recycled plastic which costs more than polystyrene. However, NuPod is designed to be stackable resulting in lower freight cost as NuPod takes up less room. So the overall cost to deliver to site is competitive. In regional areas it sometimes costs less.
Does installing NuPod result in using more concrete than polystyrene void formers?
Overall concrete volume is very similar to polystyrene pods but NuPod will generally use a bit more due to the rib centre’s being closer. However, NuPod is easier to install.
Is NuPod faster to install than other plastic void former systems?
There are fewer items to place in the NuPod system. The built-in coupler locks everything together, so it is quicker to install.
Comparison to other void former systems for a 176m2 slab:
- NuPod pod slab – 352 pieces
- Polystyrene “Waffle” pod slab – 530 pieces
- Other available plastic pod slab – 1259 pieces
How do I work out the required steel cover?
NuPod is a substitute for polystyrene pods, so the same cover is required as per the Australian Standards.
How does my site preparation impact on the final result of a NuPod slab?
Good building practice requires that subgrades are prepared to deliver a level building pad. The better the site preparation, the better the final result in concrete usage will be.
