Morbid Obesity is a chronic and life-threatening condition characterised by excessive fat storage, leading to multiple health issues known as co-morbidities. Obesity becomes “morbid” when it significantly increases the risk of obesity-related co-morbidities, resulting in significant physical disability or premature death. The term “clinically severe obesity” is also used interchangeably with morbid obesity.
Morbid obesity can be defined as:
Being 45kg or more over the ideal body weight, or
Having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40+
Having a BMI of 35+ with specific serious co-morbidities
Having undergone weight loss surgery before and requiring a review for a Revisional Procedure
According to the National Institutes of Health Consensus Report, morbid obesity is a serious and chronic disease that requires appropriate treatment. As a chronic disease, it develops gradually over an extended period, necessitating chronic treatment, such as weight loss surgery.

Obesity related health conditions are health conditions that, whether alone or in combination, can significantly reduce your life expectancy. These are termed “co-morbidities”. These co-morbid conditions are what make morbid obesity a disease in and of itself.
