Bamboo House has some really nice food, but I have found it can be a little hit and miss. The first time I went I thought it was fantastic, which is probably why I have been back a few times despite it not being great other times. Good range to choose from

We went here for a lunch and had a lovely banquet to share amongst our group.

It was certainly a treat having fine Chinese cuisine.

there was a range of dishes including saw choi boi, peking duck, steak with a sauce (sorry not sure what it was), fried rice and prawns.

The staff were attentive and ensured our dishes were cleared promptly and delivering our food whilst hot to eat.

lovely restaurant and a great dining experience.

happy to go back again !!

Love the peking duck and the cantonese beef.
The staffs are very friendly and helpful to recommend dishes and wine. They are very accommodating that they will try to prepare the dishes for you even if it is not on the menu or slightly different from the menu.
Not too crowded like other Chinese restaurant, you don't expect staffs to walk up and down the aisle serving the food so this is a really good place to enjoy top Chinese food while having the tranquility to enjoy your food.

Bamboo House is already a very popular restaurant for dumplings. The steamed buns are fresh, soft and sweet - and they are served with hoisin sauce and shredded spring onion.
Always satisfied.

I don't usually go to fine dining for chinese for some reason unknown but yesterday had to give in and said OK to go bamboo house because it was my good friend's birthday. We had the banquet for $48 per person. I went in with low expectation because to be honest never heard of this restaurant before. And the only reason we went there is because it's not busy so we could stay in there for hours. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the foods were. Especially the peking duck, it had crisp skin and the meat was tender. Also love the red bean pancake. The servings were decent and by the end of the banquet I could feel my pants tightening around the waistline.

Approximate cost: $48

first class Chinese food in Melbourne. I've eaten the best food when I've asked the chefs to just feed us and tried things that may not be on the menu (particularly the english one!)

Love this place, have been going for years. Love the authentic food and great flavors. The duck is awesome here and you must try it! Great place for a group as well, as they have private dining room.

For the best Shanghainese/Northern Chinese Food in Melbourne head down to Bamboo House which has consistently provided good Northern Chinese food for more than 20 years. Dishes of note here are the Peking Duck, which can be made into three dishes - soup, peking duck and sang choi bao. Other favourites include pot sticker dim sum, steamed dumplings with soup inside (Xiao loong bao), green onion pancake, chicken with spring onion - (chin chao kai) and more. Normally rice is not the staple here as Northern Chinese is based more on wheat products so order some buns (man tou) to go with the dishes. Essentially everything here runs like clockwork and the waiters most attentive but not intrusive. The decor changes slightly each week with two pots that have decorative flower displays between the different levels. A private dining room is available for larger functions. Whilst prices are on the high side, it is a fine dining restaurant that represents value for money in its class.

Approximate cost: $25

Update to this restaurant:

The owner has sold the business to someone else and the management has take a very different view on food quality and service. The change unfortunately has not been for the best. Service lacks the finesse of the old restaurant where the waiters were not noticeable until required and always checking that tea was refilled and hot, wine glasses were poured at the right time and dishes were presented properly (Can you imagine soup dumplings served on plates and you have to lick the plates to recover the soup when the dumplings were bit into?) Peking duck, once a signature dish now lacks flavor, and is full of fat. It is disappointing to report this change, however hopefully they will improve over time and realise that they need to return to the Bamboo House of old.
