While staying in Ballarat we decided to try the nearby Fish shop,Marty's. We soon discovered we over ordered as the fish was so enormous some of it was wasted. The batter was a bit on the soggy side and the chips could have been better. Not overly impressed.

Four of us were staying in apartments in the area and we decided to get fish and chips for tea one night. between the four of us we ordered five pieces of fish and $3 minimum chips. When we saw the size of the fish we all nearly died. The size was enormous - about twice the size of any one else's, we were astounded. I usually have two pieces of fish and eat it comfortably but I could only get through one and a half pieces with only a couple of chips. The others left half of their fish also. In the end we wasted the equivalent of two pieces of fish between the four of us. The fish was great, just a tad dear but the size made it well worth it other than the waste. I might suggest that the reviewer "Jack20" try this place again and we hope he will be pleasantly surprised this time. I must agree with other reviewers though that we have tasted better chips.

The chips aren't the best in town, but they deliver! We've given them a try on 4 occasions, the chips are burnt, the potato cakes are dry and I find it slightly expensive.

Marty's used to be good. Unfortunately over the last two visits we have been very disappointed and will not be going back. The main issue here: The size of the fish! I don't know what is happening but without exaggeration they are about 1/2 the size you would get anywhere else. They are tiny and not good value at all. The first time it happened we thought it was just bad luck, but we went back again recently and the same thing. The food quality is good but the size is really disappointing and definitely not worth the price. Lift your game Marty's to reclaim your old title of Ballarat's Best Fish and Chips!

UPDATE: 25/11/12
I hear they have changed owners a few months back so my comments above may not apply anymore.

The BEST fish and chips in ballarat by far! Was recently diagnosed with a gluten intolerance and thought I would never be able to enjoy fish and chips again, thankfully we found this shop. The chips are amazing- so golden and crispy, and the batter is great for gluten free, not too heavy or light. 5 stars!

Found the fish to be good tasting, hot and well cooked but the batter, chips and the potato cake very oily.

I am on a gluten free diet and would be lost without this food option! Lovely fish and chips. Only criticism I have is that the chip serving size is a lot smaller than I have had at other shops.

A big well done to the team at Marty's! This is the ONLY place that i know of that i can get gluten free fish and chips, and it's so nice to feel normal and eat take away every so often! The quality is great, so much so that a friend of mine actually prefers the gluten free options as he reckons it tastes better than the 'normal' food here. Couldn't recommend more highly to anyone with a gluten intolerance!

Being a Coeliac it's not very often you come across a take away food shop set up to have two distinct food areas. One for "normal " food and one for "coeliac" food, and the Gluten Free menu was the most extensive I've seen in a fish and chip shop and most other eating places. I felt extremely safe eating the food from Marty's Fish and Chip Shop and it was very tasty and crisp, a very enjoyable experience all round. If you get the chance try the 'Pumpots' there something different and quite enjoyable!!!!!!

As a severe sufferer of Coeliac disease and having a high sensitivity to gluten In the few years I have been a customer I never once have had a reaction to Marty's wonderful food. Marty and his staff are always friendly and polite and nothing is too much trouble for them. I live 50km's out of Ballarat and make regular trips in just to eat there. I have no hesitation to recommend Marty's to other Coeliac suffers or people with a gluten intolerance. Thank you
