Great lunch place. Service is quick, and the food reasonably priced for the above-average quality. Servings are generous too compared to other Japanese establishments I've eaten at, adding to the feeling that you are being well looked after at O-Bento.

Stand out dishes for me: unagi fried rice, unagi don & tempura udon. The eel in the unagi don was tender and steeped in sweet dark soy sauce, while the egg it sat on was perfectly cooked. The gyozas are also excellent and taste home-made: they feature crisp water chestnuts and other fresh ingredients.

Sushi is also very fresh due to the high turnover of customers O-Bento gets.

One niggle is that service can be a bit brisk and unsmiling, though this is understandable to some extent as I'm usually there during peak times.

Approximate cost: $15

Big servings for less than $10, this place is quite popular amongst office workers around Collins street. It's very difficult to find seat at lunch hour so I'd usually get a take away instead of eat in. My fave is the teriyaki chicken- it's different from the usual teriyaki rice sold in Japanese restaurants. This one has a chinese twist to it, maybe because the chef is chinese? The teriyaki chicken don has enoki mushroom and carrot/peas, bit like chicnese fried rice with teriyaki sauce.

I have eaten here a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed the ramen and rice at the place. They usually prepare the food pretty quick. Theres no table service but its pretty good value for money.

Tasty, freshly made lunches of delicious Japanese treats. Great take away alternative. It is a bit tucked away and during lunch time you need some patience getting a table.

Bento Boxes are a fun type of way to eat especially if you're in the mood for japanese food. The ramen is really one of a kind, and you will find yourself coming back for more like me and my friends do.

I had a lunch with my wife at O-Bento, Church Lane, Collins Plase, off 500 Collins Street. Myself and my wife both had japanese ramen and we just loved it. In recent years, there has been increasing no. of japanese cafe/restaurant appearing in the CBD but some could be operated by non-japanese owner and the food could be quite lousy. But after I tried O-Bento, I would say the ramen is one of the best that I have ever tried in Melbourne CBD. You really have to reach there before 12noon during office lunch hours or else, you end up waiting some time before a vacant table is available. Bon apetite !!
