The charm of being in a cafe that hasn't changed in 35 years (including the staff) is something to be experienced. I love sitting at the counter and watching everyone else watching everyone - trying not to look cool> The coffee is okay, and the cakes are average, but eh ambiance is unique. If you hang around long enough, you' ll spot someone important. If so, just avoid looking impressed. The melbourne instituition is needs to be preserved as an icon, not a hang out for would be coolness seekers.

This is fantastic italian food and really good coffee. The traditional italian hot chocolate is also good. There is a good selection of simple but hearty italian pasta, pizza and minestrone. I particularly like the gnocchi napoletana. It is always busy and there is a really good atmosphere.

I occasionally have a quick late lunch on Sunday afternoons at Pellegrinis. This place is Melbourne's first Italian espresso bar. I'm usually by myself, so the bar-stool seating is perfect. The food is simple Italian - pastas, minestrone soup, plenty of cakes and good coffee. Don't bother asking for anything off the menu. A lady once asked for a garden salad while I was there and the reply was something like "...we don't have a garden". This is one of the things I like about it - no bulldust. Service is fast and no-frills and it's always busy - a great atmosphere - one of my favourite places in Melbourne.
