Service was really poor, though staff clearly saw me at the bar waiting to be served others that came to bar after me got served first. Staff seemed unfriendly and overall disappointed in the customer service. Apart from the service they do have a good range of James Squire beers on tap.

The service here was really good. Great pub food, possibly slightly overpriced. They have a great range of beers.

My husband and I had dinner at the Portland Lane Cafe inside the Portland Hotel in April 2011. It looked like a really nice, upmarket bistro and looked really inviting from the outside. Even though they were busy and we didn't have a booking, they got us a table and gave us menus to look at while we waited. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't that good (especially for $20+ mains) My husband's chicken parma was overcooked and hardly had any ham. My kangaroo burger was dry and really bland. Also, once we had ordered, we found it really hard to get the attention of any waiters. Yes it was busy, but it was as if they were deliberately ignoring us! We saw other people stand up and actually approach waiters to get their attention.

For what the meal ended up costing between us ($70 including drinks and coffees) it just wasn't worth it. We won't be returning, there is just too much choice in Melbourne to go back to somewhere so mediocre!

Approximate cost: $22

Best 'pub food' experience in the Melbourne CBD. Great menu options with decent prices, something for everyone can be found at the Portland. Lovely interior in the restaurant area with adjoining bar. A must for 'hearty' food on a cold night in the city.

Really yummy 'pub' food. As expected with any CBD located restaurant, some menu options are a little pricey, but overall most items are affordable and delicious. Nicely decorated venue.

The Portland Hotel is a real pub right in the heart of the city. You can either eat in the restaurant or order from the bar next door .. same menu for both. The pub part has a much more relaxed atmosphere with couple of pool tables and couches to kick back on. Food and drinks are of excellent quality.
