Most authentic Japanese food I have had in a south eastern suburb.
Definitely recommend going to this place for lunch as they have great lunch deals and is much cheaper than going for dinner. Tried the Omakase for dinner once and whilst it is pricey it is definitely worth the try.
A small restaurant so would recommend booking ahead of time if going in groups because it can get busy.

Heard of this top quality restaurant and gave it a try. The food is very fresh. However, the alacart menu is hard to interpret if I'm not a Japanese. Also, they going to charge me $99 per head for each child (3 and 10) if we were to go for the bar dinner and we can't share the bar seafood with the children despite sitting on the round (not bar table) - very inflexible.

Love their lunch menu. It's pricey but gosh, their sashimi don is amazeballs. Rice is flavoured and fish oh, so fresh, every single time!
Their dinner is very exy so we don't find it value for money,

Used to be great. Not any more. I think it became too popular, and so the standard dropped, because they were able to trade off previously built up reputation for those less discerning.
My greatest disappointments from a recent visit are as follows:
Tempura Prawn Roll ($22) - essentially several pieces of inside out nigiri hand roll with tempura prawn. A tiny portion, and not particularly innovative or otherwise amazing to justify the price..
Gyoza ($10) - 4 pieces of elongated skinny pan fried dumplings. The presentation of the gyoza was really unique and strange. The execution wasn't great either, the dumplings were nether particularly crispy on the outside, not did they yield a juicy flavoursome filling.
The sashimi is still good, but then, lot's of japanese places offer great sashimi these days....

Last month, I stayed over at my friend's place for 4 nights.. so it was a really good opportunity for me to dine out around Glen Waverly area. Yeay! Shira Nui - Quality of food: fantastic!! The sashimi and sushi was a highlight. Service: Great service! Value: Pricey , but well worth it.

Definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. They deliver on freshness & quality of ingredients, and service. I was amazed to find such a fantastic high performing restaurant in what is generally a very low key, casual dining suburb.

A well loved Japanese place because of the good service and food. Sushi and sashimi platter is always a good choice. Momoyaki chicken is also good. The downfall of this place is that the portions of food are relatively small and therefore an average meal can end up to be around $40-$50 for dinner.

Approximate cost: $25-$35

Simply the best Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. Fast, friendly service, amazing food (I highly recommend the mixed sushi / sashimi platter). Not the cheapest place, but well worth every penny you spend.

If you REALLY want to experience Sushi as it should be, go to Shira Nui. Sit at the Sushi bar and try Omakase (leave it to the Chef) Sweet, fresh fish with rice that does not overwhelm. Nori is fresh, crunchy and flavoursome. We've been 6 times and have never been disappointed. Certainly it's not the cheapest, but in our minds, it's the best.

Approximate cost: $100 Omakase with Sake

I went there with my husband yesterday. the sushi is so nice and fresh. I can taste the sweetness of the fish. very good service always with a smile on their faces. I highly recommend to get seats the sushi bar, the chefs are nice and entertaining. It's better to make reservation a day before since it always full-house. love it.

I just loved this restaurant! I popped in there with 3 work mates for a quick lunch. The food was fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced too. I had miso soup, sushi which was excellent and terryaki chicken & rice dish. There where plenty of condiments and the service was fast. This has to be the best Japanese restaurant in the outer eastern suburbs!

This was my friend time having dinner at a Japanese restaurant, and I'm glad I tried Shira Nui first! This is a little Japanese restaurant on Springvale Road just opposite the The Glen carpark.

My friend and I ordered green tea, miso soup, sushi/sashimi platter and then lamb with an Asian salad to share. It was absolutely divine. We couldn't finish the sushi/sashimi platter! The sashimi was so fresh and lamb was perfectly cooked and had so much flavour. The place is very small so I recommend you book in advance. The waitstaff were very friendly, but not to the point where they become a bit imposing on you. The price is up there though, so it's definitely one of those "sometime" restaurants. Great Japanese restaurant around Glenny. Would definitely recommend this place to others!

Approximate cost: $40

Dined here with my aunty, and we LOVED it! The food was beautiful-everything we ordered. They had a beautiful Japanese rice wine that I really enjoyed. I have since tried to purchase it at many bottle shops but to no avail. Wait staff were friendly.

Small restaurant with small seating space. Very busy but service was quick and attentive. Food was very good and very different from any other Japanese restaurant. Good value for money. Food with an unique taste. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I recently went on a Saturday for lunch and although the lunch menu choices are limited, service is quick, friendly and gracious. Waitresses were happy to stop and explain what items on the menu were. Very busy so you need to book ahead. What I had was absolutely delicious :)

This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne - and what a surprise that it is out in the burbs! The food is AMAZING - especially at the sushi bar, even better than at the table. But be sure to book ahead - it is very popular with those who know!!

Dining omakase (lit 'let the chef decide') is the way to go here if you are after a truly memorable and special dining experience. Simply advise Hiro on what you like (Melbourne's only sushi chef with a license to cut Fugu, blowfish, by the way) and an amazing series of sushi will come your way with helpful advice and a show. A la carte dining is also amazingly good.

Approximate cost: $25

I visited this restaurant when I was visiting Melbourne from Sydney. I luv the sushi bar, albeit a bit expensive, We dare not to bite onto the sushi until we hear the command sent down from the head chef. We were holding our stomachs when we were leaving.

Shira Nui is great quality for a suburban Japanese restaurant. The omikase menu, where you eat at the sushi counter, and the chef produces dish after dish until you are full, is a great dining experience, although not a cheap one! The lunch menu however is fantastic value, with set meals of high quality all under $20. The ambiance is very pleasant and the service efficient.

The Mix n Match of the new Japanese cusine makes this cosy place a wonderful experience. The Omakase is surely highly recommended. Owner Hiro and Chef Yuki bringing Japanese's Sushi into a new level of experience. New and daring combination makes your appetite to hungry even at the end of the night! The Beef Sushi, Deep Fry White Bait Sushi, BB Sauces Oyster Sushi, PanFry Tuna Sushi..... You have to try to believe it.

Nice Japanese food. This would count as mediocre Japanese food in Japan and probably the most authentic Japanese food you can get in Melbourne. The Chef and staff is Japanese. A bit pricey. but cheaper than a plane ticket to Japan. Costs about $12 a dish, however probably need about 3 or for dishes between 2 people. Nice small place. Always booked out.

The desert is AMAZING!!!. Best desert ever. ...Very small though. however that is fine dining for you.

We have eaten off the menu and also had the sushi special at the bar. The menu gives good quality standard Japanese food, but eating the chef's sushi menu at the bar is a great Japanese food experience. The sushi is authentic and top quality. There is a wide variety. It is really nicely presented, and there is lots of it.

Approximate cost: $30-70
