I love this chip shop... every trip to the beach at Semaphore tops off with a fish & chip dinner. I order the local flake with regular chips & only eat there with a friend else the seagulls get the lions share of my chips. BRING YOUR OWN LEMON! They either do not supply them or have run out. Also keeping some oil soaking paper towels is advisable to lay your battered fish in as they are indeed fresh but as with all deep fries they will have an oil surplus that makes having some strong paper towels (the kind you'd use at home for putting your own fried stuff in... unless of course you love all that oil). It's easy to say their chips are great; because they are.
CLOSED ON MONDAYS 1130am till 8pm ... ish, I went there yesterday for lunch with a friend (Thursday) 12 PM & it was still closed, which ticked us off but never let emotion get between you & your food lol, I suppose they open in a round about way, perhaps call first.

It is probably best to call in your order and then pick up as the wait times here can be horrendous during busy times. BUT it is worth the wait, the fish is so fresh and delicious and the chips are perfect, staff are friendly and the portions are generous.

This is the place to get your fish and chips or your yiros if you are in Semaphore. Looks like Soto which is owned by greeks, is an institution. I love their signs explaining some of the food and etiquette.
There is a sign saying - During busy periods, if you are in a hurry, dont order.
Another states that the lamb in their yiros is meat from a leg of lamb which has been grilled so as to be as fat free as possible but the best sign explains why their chips are all different sizes. They cut them themselves daily so as not to use frozen or processed chips which have added chemicals.
This is why you get the best tasting chips and best battered fish in town. Its all been done with love.
p.s. if you order minimum chips, make sure there are 2 of you around to eat them. If its only you and you are getting fish, substitute chips for 2 potato cakes. Potato cakes also cut each day. Also decor isnt much but then again its a take away. Did I mention they still wrap their fish and chips in paper. This actually saves the environment because paper is biodegradable. Min Chips $4.50 approx. Fish varying prices. Fish cakes about $1.50 I think. Bon Appettit guys

I have mixed feelings about this fish and chip shop, my first visit was excellent, chips perfect and fish tasted fresh. My burger was huge and delicious. But with my most recent visit my chips and fish were soggy, certainly not drained enough. Yes they were busy, but surely they can still do a proper job with draining the oil.

I am still willing to give them another try as people do have off days and maybe this was one of them.

An amazing fish and chips shop. Although I rarely get to visit this store I always make sure when i go to Adelaide that I get fish and chips and sit on the beach. The shop is always busy which just shows how popular this is. Parking looks to be difficult however was not an issue for me as i always walked from Semaphore Park along the beach to get there. The fish and chips are always fresh and i love how the chips are hand cut. The prices are also very reasonable. Well worth a visit if you are in the area!

This is a great fish and chip shop. You can phone through an order no problem. It is always busy which shows how good they are. The chips are hand cut so all different shapes but very yummy. The crumbed fish was nice and not very greasy. The hamburgers are big and a little greasy but the patty is very tasty. Service is great, parking however is tricky as this is a busy street so bring a friend to double park while you run in.

Thanks for this great level of detail - very helpful tip about Semaphore road, you're right, it seems it's always congested these days...

Whenever we go to Semaphore, this is our favourite fish and chip place, they take care if we ask for gluten free fish and don't put chicken salt on the chips. The fish is fresh and tasty, the chips are always crisp and yum.

Approximate cost: $10.00

I agree with everyone else best fish and chips in Adelaide. I used to live within walking distance and would go there regularly. Now that i have moved away i still make a trip down there every now and then. The only downside is that it is always busy. But trust me it is worth the wait.

BarryBac 21 May 2012

Yes the Fish and Chips here really blend with the Semaphore sea breeze and they are always fresh as they are always turning over lots of product.

Best fish & chips in Adelaide without a doubt. Often a huge line up but they are more than worth the wait. The staff are really friendly even when it is ridiculously busy.

one of the only places who still does fresh potatoes, theres alot of people out there saying certain people use fresh potatoes when I know for a fact they don't.. but these guys use fresh potatoes not frozen, the owner really cares about top quality fruit and veg, hes willing to pay good money for the best produce available instead of looking for the cheapest available, in my book that makes him the best fish shop in adelaide, there are other shops who do fresh potatoes but they do go for the cheaper fruit and veg. nice people who make great quality food. believe me

Soto's is the best. It's hard to understand until you become a semi-regular visitor. They give generous portions and cater for large groups of people, very well!

The best fish and chip shop in Adelaide. The food & chips made using real potatoes. No frozen chips here. Fish also delicious and not coated in too much greasy batter, first fish I have had for years where I didn't peel of half the batter and throw it away!! They are generally busy, I guess relevant to the quality of the food, but you can phone an order through ahead if you are in a hurry.
What is better than great old fashioned quality fish & chips eaten straight from the paper whilst you are down near the beach, no matter summer or winter it is brilliant.

Hands down, the best fish and chip shop in Adelaide. They make their chips fresh using real potatoes. No frozen chips here. Expect to wait a while, they are always busy so ring ahead if you can. Also note that they close early regardless of how many customers are hanging around.
