I joined specifically to go to classes, as advised on my initial tour of the club. There are never any spots in any of the classes I am able to attend, I complained about this multiple times to the staff there and was always assured more classes were coming - they didn't. I went to cancel and was advised I have to pay the cancellation fee as well as another direct debit. They advised they are too big to cater for individual members needs, but not big enough to waive fee's when they did not hold up their end of the contract. If you want to actually be helped on your fitness journey, and not just be another face in the crowd, this is definitely not the gym for you.

Does anyone know if Virgin Active uses QuickPay for member payments? I had a bad experience with QuickPay recently, I've made a website to explain what happened, Google search 'Beware of QuickPay'

I love this gym! It has a really positive feel to it. The equipment is great, there is never a long wait for any of the machines and it is generally a nice environment. Best gym I have ever been a member of.

I'm far from an enthusiastic gym-goer, but I love Virgin Active. The equipment is plentiful and well-maintained (and goes well beyond the basic treadmill-bike-rower setup), there's a great variety of classes, and other unique touches like sleep pods, a rock climbing wall, spa & plunge pool, etc. The (female) change rooms are big, bright and clean - although it can be hard to get a locker at peak times.

Approximate cost: $55 per fortnight, plus joining fee

One of the best gyms around. I love the way they take care of their equipment. There are no smelly lifters too, the manners of the people training here are on a high level and probably because the gym has strict policy.

I must say I was thoroughly surprised with this gym. I made the decision to join as it was a 10 minute walk from work, however, I felt myself, returning 5 days a week, over the weekend because of the relaxing, fun atmosphere, not intimidating like most health clubs.

The PT's are friendly, knowledgeable and not pushy, they provide the right amount of encouragement to assist you in achieving your health and fitness goals.

Pros: incredible classes to choose from, convenient on line booking system. Loads of machines!

Cons: wished it closed later on weekends, lower casual fees?

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the service :)

Ok....so I joined and quit this particular gym a couple of times. I must say that Virgin Active has the best classes/equipment/facilities in Melbourne. The gym has a pool, sauna, power plate room (with 8 machines!), sleeping pod area, a variety of gym equipment and 4 rooms for group exercise. They have variety of classes which start from as early as 6 am and as late as 7. There are also mid day classes which are convenient for working professionals who have a long lunch break.

Trainers are nice and not as pushy as other gyms. They dont call you every day to discuss whether you would like to get some more personal training. Generally they are very professional and easy going.

Value for money: The gym is quite expensive compared to others, however it is well worth the money. There are no contracts and you can freeze your account when you are travelling. I believe a standard member pays around $115 per month all inclusive. Students get a good discount and pay around $85. There is a joining fee which is also quite hefty however I do not remember exactly how much it was.

The gym gets really packed in the morning, mid day and after hours, however theres plenty of equipment for everyone. I would recommend going late at night if possible.

Beware that sometimes their payment system does not work as good as one would hope. I got double charged and had to show my bank account because the back office lady did not believe me. It took them over a month to reverse the transaction and give me back my money. I got so annoyed that I quit. Also, they did not want to stop my membership because I could not go to the gym and personally talk to someone about the reasons why I wouldnt want to continue with my membership.

Generally all my friends are very happy with the service so it may be my own bad luck thats let me down.

Approximate cost: $115

For me the best thing about this gym the pool. There is a large number and variety of classes and an easy system for booking online. The rock climbing wall is great fun, and the cardio machines have iPod docks so you don't have to listen to that awful gym music.

This place is the mother of all gyms! I've used the sleeping pods and they are awesome only thing is you need time to use them and we've all forgotten how to take time out for ourselves to relax- me included! The gym costs $27 per week and for me that's a lot as I am quite a bargain chaser... But I think this place is WORTH it! Love everything everyone has said about this place, only wish it was closer to home or open 24hrs! Really the stand out are the staff, Richard Branson knows what he is doing cos the staff are always happy and always extremely helpful. Bonus, no contracts. Joining fee of $179 from memory and you can hold your membership if you are going in holidays for more than a month etc. I guarantee you will not regret joining this gym, it is an oasis in the Melbourne CBD.

Approximate cost: $27 per week

Love this place!! the price is comparable to fitness first. this place offers rock climbing, power plate, pilates reformer (w. the pilates bed), swimming pool. Different classes, friendly staffs and fitness instructors. Not too hard in selling which leaves customers with no pressure to sign up for PT.

Approximate cost: $29.95 per week
