This review is for A-Team Tree Works, Bateau Bay NSW

verified email - 09 Nov 2014

I met these guys a few years ago. They were going door to door in the Lake Haven area asking if anybody needed tree work done. Since we wanted to have several trees removed and some others pruned, we gave them the job on the spot. Little did we know at the time that there had been warnings in the media about rogue tree-lopping gangs preying on vulnerable residents, and forcing them to pay exorbitant fees for shoddy work. Anyway, within an hour a whole team of tree-loppers arrived at our home, chainsaws roaring. Thankfully, they did not try to rip us off, and their work was good enough that we recently hired them again. For the latest job, they charged $300 to remove two palm trees from our front yard. They cleaned up their mess, and took care not to hurt other plants in the garden. That is always a bonus.

This review is for K-Cee's Cafe, Toukley NSW

This is a popular place and has a wide range of items on the menu: pizzas, hot chips, steak sandwiches and so on. I usually go for the open cheese melts, costing $9.90 and topped with your choice of ingredients such as bacon, chicken and asparagus. The pizzas are good too for the price. The last time I visited, I noticed that they have free wifi for customers.

This review is for Asian Haven, Toukley NSW

I've eaten here a few times... it is not too bad but the food is a little too oily and bland for my taste. Asian Haven reminds me the old-style Chinese restaurants you might find in an Australian country town. The food is not exactly authentic, but it is hearty enough. Last time I was here I ordered the chicken laksa for $10. Other items I noticed on the menu included a seafood pack, a range of fish dishes and a selection of Thai dishes costing from $11 to $15. On Mondays and Tuesdays, I am told, senior card holders get a 20 per cent discount.

Good range of sandwiches, pies and other items here. Personally, I like the spinach and feta roll which goes for $4.30. The Tradies Special featuring a bacon and egg roll with regular coffee is available before 10am, costing $7.50. Cakes can be made to order here.

This review is for N Thai Sing, Toukley NSW

I often stop here for the $8.90 lunch special (rice or noodles with meat or tofu). It is a quaint restaurant on Toukley's main street, with wooden paneling and a panoramic picture of Bangkok on the wall inside. Combined with the Thai pop music that they play on the sound system, the decor makes you feel as if you have been magically transported to a resort on the Gulf of Thailand. Some of the dishes on the menu here include Siam duck ($18.90), tom yum goong soup ($12.90) and Panang curry for $14.90 to $17.90, depending on what ingredients you pick to put in it. The staff are friendly, and the restaurant hosts live music on Saturday nights. I believe there is another 'N Thai Sing in Terrigal, but I have never been there.

This review is for Legends Bakery, Wyong NSW

verified email - 04 Oct 2014

Legends Bakery is a local institution and has won a raft of awards for its fresh, home-made products. I know several people who travel from as far away as Toukley to buy their cakes and breads here. Earlier in the week I dropped in at the bakery and ordered a roast beef, chutney and avocado sandwich on multi-grain bread for $6.30. It certainly hit the spot, and while I was eating it I noticed some intriguing items behind the counter, such as Vegemite and cheese scrolls costing $2.50 each.

This review is for Ocean Blue WB Restaurant, Gorokan NSW

verified email - 02 Oct 2014

This business was taken over by its current owners at the end of 2012, and is reportedly growing in popularity. While seafood is their speciality, I usually prefer the burgers and the kebabs here. The last time I visited, beef kebabs were $7.30, hot chicken rolls $6, and grilled fish and chips $8.50. A quarter of a chicken and chips would set you back $7.50, while the chicken schnitzel burger combo meal is $11. All chickens at Ocean Blue are gluten-free. The restaurant is full of nautical decorations which might amuse you while you wait for your meal to be cooked.

This review is for Coastal Lakes Medical Practice, Lake Haven NSW

verified email - 29 Sep 2014

This medical centre is very convenient for people living in the Lake Haven area. Often you don't even need to make an appointment, you can just turn up and see the doctor whenever you feel like it. Maybe I have been lucky, but I find the doctors here are dedicated and passionate, they genuinely care about their patients. Bulk billing is available for health card holders, pensioners and children aged under 16. The practice operates another medical centre in Lake Munmorah. Both centres are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6pm.

This review is for Gorokan Barber Shop, Gorokan NSW

verified email - 26 Sep 2014

This place is a little bit different: a traditional barber shop where all the barbers are women! These girls really know how to cut men's hair, however, and the shop is always busy as a consequence. Currently celebrating 20 years in business, a standard cut here will cost $22 or $18 for pensioners. Please note there are no concession prices on Saturday mornings.

This review is for The Chicken Carvery And Takeaway, Charmhaven NSW

verified email - 24 Sep 2014

This place always seems to do a busy trade from workers and motorists passing on the Pacific Highway. The owners/staff are friendly and genuine, and there are plenty of items on the menu. The last time I visited, specials included Shepherd's Pie ($6), bacon and mushroom fettuccine ($6), and pasta lasagna ($5). In the past I have tried the chicken kebab here, but I found it flaky and not to my liking. I prefer the potato scallops burger ($3.50), which I have never seen made anywhere else. Just potato scallops between two buns with a sauce of your choice... strange idea but it seems to work! If that doesn't appeal to you, the Carvery also sells a range of hot dogs and other takeaway classics.
