Beautiful fresh flake, nicest I have had potato cakes were golden and beautiful too, highly recommend this place if you want great fish and chips

I can't disagree with the good write-up this place has from its other reviewers. We got flake, chips, dim sims and potato cakes and all were cooked beautifully, had that light, crispy batter and were not oily at all. The potato cake was really thick and yummy and the dim sim not overcooked like some places. All for $23, which was very reasonable - flake is $5.20 per piece.

The staff were quick to take my order and seemed pleasant even though it was near closing time. That's another good thing, they don't close until 8.30 unlike most others which close at 8.00. Not open Mondays, but all other days from 11.00 am until 8.30.

Also do souvlaki at $8.00 and burgers from $4.00 - 7.00. They have meal packs and orders over $30 get a free large bottle of drink.

It's an unassuming little shop with a grey floor and black menu board, not very inspiring decor but the food makes up for that.

Vernon Street which was always narrow, has now been made one-way, so parking is a bit of a hassle. I parked in Kernot Street - the next parallel one and just walked around the corner as Big Al's is the second shop from the bottom anyway.

Definitely worth considering when you are around here.

We love our fish and chips from Al's. Lovely family business that are also very involved in the community. Give Al's a go, you will not be disappointed.

Best fish and chips I have ever had. Chips are always crunchy and flavorsome, the flake always tastes fresh and delicious, the batter is light and crispy unlike the heavy doughy batter you get at other fish and chip shops. Very highly recommended.
