I've been to the box on 2 separate occasions, the first time was lovely, I ordered salmon which was cooked beautifully. The professional waitress was great. After that positive experience I returned a month or two later. Was sold on the lobster by waiter, telling him I wanted to be able to taste the meat, suggests the cheesy sauce. I say no and we decide butter, garlic and herbs will be perfect. Shame they over cooked it and it arrived chewy and I was not going to eat $150 chewy lobster. After the waitress from my previous visit inquired if everything was okay, as the waiter who was serving us had walked past a number of times with out managing to notice the full lobster i had pushed to the side for attention.
I explain that it is chewy and i won't eat it. Money was not the issue, there was no offer to replace the dish, instead the waiter says 'people with beliefs try to eat things they shouldn't then they get up set when they don't like it.'
I didn't inquire as to what that meant. I was not impressed though.
With no offer to remedy my disappointment I asked for his advice for ordering lobster in the future and how would I could avoid getting this kind of chewy lobster again as it is inedible. His answer 'oh you must order it fresh, look i'll get you some desserts okay' which left a much better taste in my mouth. It was a nice way to make up for it - how ever his first response was very off putting.
I would not return, unless i saw a heap of fresh recent and positive reviews here and if even then I think I would be hard to get the waiters attitude out of my mindset. Sorry the Box one out of two isn't bad - but it isn't exactly good either.

I cannot remember a time when I have had worse service or food at a restaurant. The waitress was intolerably rude to the point where I thought she was channelling John Cleese! After being told off like a couple of schoolgirls for entering through the "wrong door" we were led to a table out the back. No sooner had we sat down than we were rudely told we would need to move to the front of the restaurant. All my instincts were telling me to leave at this point but as it was late and we were only here for coffee and dessert after the theatre we decided to stay. My friend ordered the lemon tart and I ordered a caramel roulade. The roulade turned out to be a very bad custard surrounded by an undercooked meringue, the entire mess drowing in a cup of espresso. My friend's lemon tart needed a sledge hammer to hack through the pastry, and a spoon to eat the watery filling!

I truly cannot believe this restaurant is still in business!

One of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in recent years, and something which I would not expect from a restaurant in Collins Street.

Approximate cost: $16.00

This is one of the most increasable dining experiences that I have ever had.
It was our anniversary and I wanted to have something special. We were looked after so well that we felt like the only ones in the restaurant. The food was amazing and the service was tentative without being intrusive. The table in the front window was a perfect touch (management's choice not mine).
If you have a special occasion and you want something different for that someone special and yourself you can't go wrong.

Approximate cost: $100 p/p
