The shop assistants here are extraordinarily rude. They are abrupt when they serve you (as if they are doing you a favour), their system of arranging books is made to suit them and is incomprehensible if you are looking for a book, and worst of all, I've been at the counter twice when they've been making rude comments about customers! I was shocked. Book City has the best range of books in Ballarat, but after hearing one staff member complaining to another (at the counter!) about how a customer smelled I decided never to return. I'd rather buy online.

A big 'Thumbs Up' to you for your honesty. I recently had a similar experience and will be rating this business shortly. It's all a huge pity really, as this WAS one of our favourite shops. They have lost alot of money from our family and friends!

I have now stopped shopping at Book City Ballarat & prefer to do my book shopping elsewhere. I had an experience with the sales assistant at Book City. I bought a book for my father for Father's Day...but a relative gave him the same book. I then went to return the book & the sales assistant kept stating that they "Don't like to give refunds" in a vague way. I then pressed her on what she meant by that statement & she proceeded to discuss with the other sales assistant if the book looked in decent enough condition for a refund! I had not even opened this book after buying it. I was disgusted at how I was treated.

Approximate cost: $39.00

Sadly, it appears as though a lot of businesses use this supposed 'excuse' to refuse your legal right to a refund. Having spoken with Consumer Affairs about this, I was told that many businesses offer a 'Good Will' refund in these type of cases, so as not to lose your custom. The fact is that Ballarat is a very small place, and word of mouth goes a very long way indeed to both making or breaking a business.

Good book shop with a wide range. Books are easy to find and the store is spacious. On the occasions that I have needed help, the staff are friendly and knowledgable. I find that the books are expensive though and it can pay to shop around.

Approximate cost: $30.00 for new release
