I was craving a fried food hit and dropped into this little shop in busy Barkly street shopping area. It's in the group at the outer end of the shops which includes a woodfired pizza place, a $2 shop and a pharmacy.

It's a tiny place only a little wider than the front glass window which is decorated in a cute surround of Nemo pictures and there's a small space in front of the serving counter where they've squeezed two small square tables and a couple of chairs.

Con must have been the previous owner unless he's the spouse of one of the lovely Asian ladies who served me. Very friendly and smiling, asked me how I wanted my order and it was cooked in a flash.

The prices are very reasonable too - they're not spending the profits on the decor (fake woodpanel from the 80's - but it's clean). Flake was $4.30 and souvlaki's $7. Steak sandwiches and toasted sandwiches are on offer as well as burgers and your normal fish and chip menu - prawns in batter and banana fritters too. There are "value" packs for a good price.

The potato cakes were HUGE. Thick and full of hot potato goodness in a crispy batter.

So, forget the slightly out-of-time vibe of the place, I found the people nice and the food tasty and good value.

Approximate cost: $8
