We have a long history with this beautiful hotel and have seen it go through significant ups and downs over the past 25 years. For a long time it was an outstanding little gem, a 3-star venue in a 5-star location with some great deals to be had. Then it went through its dark period where it was bought out by foreign owners and driven into the ground, a period during which not even the most loyal supporter could bear to go near the place. Since being taken over in 2012 by a local investor, our beloved Fairmont is once again rising out of the ashes with the reinstatement of many of the original staff and a return to the old levels of service and appointments. Management appears to be trying to foster a "family friendly" theme with lots of activities and new equipment targeted directly at kids which some years ago would have been exciting to us but which is perhaps not so desirable now that we are mature empty-nesters. My husband and I still love coming to stay for the odd 2-3 day getaway but it is more because of the stunning location and our sentimental attraction to the venue than any real resemblance it bears to the hotel of our past. There are probably other places that represent better value for money although we are keeping an open mind as we realise The Fairmont is still a work in progress. Certainly families with high disposable income will find it a great place to take the kids as there is plenty to amuse the ankle-biters while Mum and Dad lounge by the pool with a book, or chill with a cocktail in the fireside bar. Best time of year is mid-winter when the fire is roaring, the rain is lashing, and the Fairmont surrounds you like a big warm hug. As well, its proximity to Leura and Katoomba (with their plethora of quirky shops and cafes, art & craft markets and stunning scenery) means you will never be bored.
