I had a rather unfortunate experience with this firm when I visited for a "free" 30 minute family law consultation as advertised on their website. I was able to have some of my questions answered however when I tried to leave, knowing that the 30 mins was almost up and I would be charged for the subsequent time (I did sign a form to that effect), I was told by the lawyer attending me "oh, don't worry about that". I think personally this would give anyone a reasonable expectation that the charging policy was more flexible than perhaps first thought. So I did not leave straightaway and several weeks later discovered I was being chased by the accounts department for an outstanding invoice for the remainder of the time - almost $200. I was extremely disappointed as the first half of the free 30 minutes had been very general information about family law, most which I was already aware of having done some basic internet research. In my case, paying this invoice is not about the money itself, but rather the principle, or the lack of principle shown by this firm/lawyer during this consultation. I fear for other people who may not have the means to pay, who may not have financial means perhaps as a result of a controlling spouse, who would be affected by a scheme like this. If a "free" 30 minute consultation is not designed to be a money making exercise then why not let a potential client know when their time is nearly up? Ask if they have anymore questions they would like answered before the 30 minutes is up. Have a timer on the table so they are aware of when the time starts and ends. Be honest with people. DON'T tell a person straight up not to worry about the time when they attempt to leave. OF COURSE the person charging $350 an hour is not concerned about the time!! I would not want to use a law firm that uses underhanded tactics such as this, and luckily there are many other firms around so I don't have to. I'm just not sure how many people have had this happen who have had a bad taste left in their mouth - surely they don't go on to become clients either..? It is my sincere hope that posting this review will result in an honest reevaluation of this service by Hicks Oakley Chessell Williams so that other people, including those less fortunate than myself, are not put under financial strain after visiting for a "free" consultation. I believe this kind of practice is predatory and has no place in the legal system. Be upfront with people, give them a chance to walk out the door before you start charging like a wounded bull.
