We were pleasantly surprised with our experience at this long standing restaurant. The pizza and bruschetta were delicious and every main we ordered were of generous size and very flavoursome. We even had desserts that were divine!! To top it all off, our waitress was exceptional. Definitely recommend a visit!

I've only had pizza from here. They seem to be twice the price of a La Porchetta pizza but definitely worth extra price. The last pizza I had was a Mexicana. The salami was great and the chili flavouring perfect. I was also very impressed by how fresh and perfectly cooked the vegetables were, and the staff behind the counter were very welcoming and pleasant.

went for breakfast, was craving chicken pizza

the actual restaurant's quite nice, great tasteful décor, bit quaint and definitely has that italian 'vibe'

pizza was pretty cheap, around 20 bucks for a large

the only downside was the wait for the meal, waited for around 15 minutes at least (which would have been forgiveable if the place was packed and busy, but we rocked up saturday morning and there were only two other tables that were occupied)

but overall, would probably return (the pizza was really fresh, and the staff were quite lovely!)

We chose to eat lunch here today as Il Gambero is in close proximity to the Melbourne Museum, and let's face it, I'd much rather eat a decent lunch than pay ridiculous prices for a soggy sandwich.
We were quickly seated and offered a high chair (which could have done with a bit of a scrub). The high chair did not have a harness which I found quite concerning. I ended up having my 7 month old on my lap for most of the meal as I was worried he would topple over/out.
We had quite a flamboyant and energetic waiter. We ordered the tiger prawn and scallop risotto(entree size $18.90); fettucine carbonara, and a kids meal of fish and chips.
The kids meal was SO disappointing. At $12.50, I considered it to be ridiculously expensive and bordering on a rip off, considering most restaurants charge around $6 for similar. The serve of fish was tiny.
My risotto was nice, with a healthy amount of seafood.
My husband ordered a main sized fettucine. When it came out, the waitress told us that they had accidentally made an entree size, and so she would bring out another entree size shortly. We asked if they could just leave it at an entree, but apparently it was already on it's way and so could not be stopped.
They have Monteith's Apple Cider on tap which was the perfect accompaniment to the meal.
Service was fast and friendly; we were in and out in 45 minutes.
Would I return? Maybe, if I had a voucher. Otherwise I think it's too pricey, especially if you have kids in tow.
A good alternative to bland museum food that is 5 minutes walk from the Melbourne Museum.

Approximate cost: $20

Hi Curlycee, thanks for another trustworthy, detailed review! While we believe the entrée-sized (risotto) was a little expensive, the kidâ??s meal was exorbitantly priced, shameful in fact! Thank you kindly for the heads-up! Reeces

This is a lovely restaurant with plenty of seating available.

Whilst there are many Italian restaurants along Lygon Street this is a good one, but not the best in my opinion.

I have found that the pizza do not come with much toppings. I would prefer more ingredients.

I have ordered several times the home made gnocchi pasta which is quite good and tastes homemade.

Staff are friendly and efficient.

Il Gambero is a decent palace for a typical "Italian" meal (Pizza and Pasta). The atmosphere is cozy, with mood lighting, warmth and earthy tones, with suitable space for each table. It is a good place to grab a quick, comfortable dinner with a friend as it is a fair mix of classy and cheap. The range of food is extensive, we have had a potato pizza, pumpkin risotto, pork shoulder pizza and garlic bread. All were satisfactory, but not amazing. The garlic bread being the most disappointing, with little garlic and burnt around the edges.

Approximate cost: $13 entrée, 20 main

Awful.
I ordered a salad and very clearly asked for 'No beef' (i'm vegetarian)
My salad came with beef (in steak form)
Upon querying the waiter and informing her of the problem, my plate was removed.
20mins later, the salad reappeared - I swear it was the same dish simply with the piece of meat on top taken away.
(this is inappropriate, as most people with dietary specifications would explain)
The meat problem aside, the salad was one of the worst I have ever had.
I thought salads are quite simple, but this salad was overdressed with a oily vinaigrette and the result was simply unpleasant.
A further complaint, is the lack of waiter care at this restaurant. The waiters are very slow and unresponsive.
Additionally, there are some problems with cleanliness in the plate. It would seem that the tables for the entire restaurant are laid well in advance, and only changed over whenever a group uses the table. Perhaps the restaurant does not turnover very many tables, as several plates on our table were dusty or contained sediment.
I would not return.

Hi Rosep1, when it comes to vegetarian food (irrespective of whether you have an allergy or not), this is a serious faux par. Having said this, we have devised a way around it, so if you would like additional information, feel free to private message us. This combined with the pre-laid tables would be sufficient cause for us to avoid such an establishment. Thanks for the notification! Reeces.

$300 for six including a couple of bottles of wine. Meals were in general bland. Portion sizes were good. Service was average, with the waitress "losing" or initial drinks order. At the time of food service all meals were delivered except for one with was not served until all other meals had been eaten! Even worse considering the last meal was a pizza! Pretty dissapointed overall.

Approximate cost: $20

Hi Ericaw, thanks for the heads-up! Certainly sounds like the business in question should brush-up on their level of customer service. Reeces
