Took our elderly cat Alfie to have teeth removed. Went to pick him up at end of day but they told us they were having trouble getting him to come out of the anaesthetic even though he had had the op early in the day, and were told to come back in 45 mins. Got here just before closing time to find he was so out of it, he was almost comatose. He couldn't even lift his head or close his eyes. Left alone for a few moments with one of the young girls working there, she opened the cage lid, picked up his head in her hands and said 'look alive!'. We were so dumbfounded and horrified by what she said and did that we were speechless. We paid and took our baby home...in that condition with instructions from the Vet to try him with a bit of food etc... leading us naturally to believe that no matter how bad he looked they must be expecting him to improve...(even though he had been like that all day)...but they were the professionals so we took them at their word. He lay on the floor and made a couple of valiant attempts to walk a bit, but at 1am he started convulsing and died before our very eyes in the most horrendous way. it was the longest 5 minutes of our lives and I'm sure for our Alfie it felt like an eternity. Our complaint isn't about the outcome...the death of Alfie...he was elderly and may have had some underlying issues that contributed. He was also a difficult cat to treat and bit and scratched some of the staff, including the Vet and they said they had to give him extra sedation and then something to counter that afterwards, but as we took him in as a stray we have no way of knowing what trauma and abuse he may have suffered in his early years. At all other times he was a sweet, loving and affectionate boy. But they had to KNOW just by looking at him that he was NOT going to SURVIVE THE NIGHT and they should have told us and given us the option of allowing him to go peacefully and with dignity. Neither Alfie nor my sister and I were treated with the respect we deserved. Bottom line is they had had enough of him, they wanted to close up shop and go home...translation: they didn't care. A week later we get a token card from them...not personally signed by any of the staff...just a formality...we will never go back there with our other furkids and will warn everyone we know about them.
