Lovely owners as well as great quality meat and service. I’m not sure about other peoples experiences from the review people are making but this is the best butcher shop In Ballarat and I recommend getting to know the lovely owners and staff.

WARNING !! -- STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY !!!
I went in on 17.June 2017 at approx. 10.00 am to purchase about 1 kg of diced beef (would be ca $20) and use a $5 gift voucher as part payment; this voucher was from a voucher booklet (cost $150) to promote various businesses in Ballarat; the lady behind the counter told me that the voucher was only valid once I had purchased $50+ worth with a discount of 5% using a different voucher; I said: "there is no mention of that on the $5 voucher; it actually clearly states 'not valid in conjunction with any other offer' " She then tried to explain that it was the organisers of the voucher booklet (which cost $150 !) which they had signed up for for promotion who got it wrong. (Note : should you not check that BEFORE the booklet is printed?) It was then when HE joined the calm conversation the lady and I had saying he was not going to honour the voucher. I said that the problem with any errors or the like is between you and the organisers; I bought the booklet in good faith, and by law he would actually be obliged to honour the voucher. He started to yell at me with a barrage of filthy language and not printable expletives and name callings, got into my personal space and shoved me yelling for me to get out; I said still very calmly "What is your problem ? I am not blaming you; just stating the facts." The lady tried to calm him down as well saying; "He is not blaming you". But nothing was going to stop this guy, he continued with his filthy verbal assault and I went outside the shop, the lady and I were still talking nicely with each other about the problem outside, whilst HE was still yelling from the inside; then he came out and tried to push me away ON the footpath and I said "I am on public property here, not in your shop." The lady also said that to him he could not do that. I said goodbye to the lady and left.
So, I would recommend to stay away or not even come close to this butcher, but if you want some free filthy verbal abuse with lots of expletives, this is the place to go to !

This actually sounds like the promotion booklet got it wrong, and you were being an ass over $5.

Selling the best quality lamb and rib eye steaks with a smile and exceptional service is what makes this butcher one of my favourites. The lamb is local Ballarat lamb, and the beef is from Queensland so I'm told.

I was recommended to this butcher as I'm new in the area. I wanted a leg of lamb "butterflied" for a special barbeque I was havining and went to this supplier to obtain the meat. When I got home and opened the bag the meat was supplied in, I was appalled to find that the the butcher had just hacked the meat off the bone and supplied the supposed prime cut in tatters. When I called on the phone I was put through to the butcher, but when I explained my concern I was subjected to unrepeatable profanity and the phone was slammed down in my ear. Thinking that the manager was having a bad day; I waited for 10 minutes and called back again but when he heard it was me he immediately profanely abused me and again slammed the phone down once more. Will I ever go back there; never, never, never.

Approximate cost: $29.00

A sure sign of an unprofessional and dysfunctional business! Sorry you had to experience such a vulgar display of behaviour upon your arrival to our beautiful city. Please take heart, not all businesses are like this one. Regards, Reeces

I've dealt with Lange's twice, the first was a terrible experience regarding blunt and rude service from the shop girls, but I felt I should give them a second chance because everybody has bad days... What a mistake!
As a novice cook and meat buyer, I hope that when I go to a Butcher's to inquire about meat, they will be accommodating, friendly and explain answers to my questions. Unfortunately Lange's is NOT this type of butchers.
I'd found a beautiful Greek recipe calling for boned lamb necks (which I HAD got another time from down the road at Pete's butchers, but he didn't have enough on this occasion). I called Lange's to speak to the butcher and he proceeded to, very rudely, tell me that obtaining this kind of meat was impossible and that the other butcher must have given me something else like mutton (which he had not!). He made me feel really silly and small and he didn't even offer an alternative.
As a paying customer I expect a level of service that is aimed at generating business (or at the very least, treating people with decency) but Lange's seems to place to zero value on it's customer service.
I ended up calling Pete's butchers back, explained my dilemma, and after an in depth conversation where he explained which cuts of meat could be a substitute, he said he would bone what he had plus some four quarters to make up the right amount. He couldn't have been more helpful. Now THAT was service!

We've been to Lange's a few times and generally the quality has been good though on the odd occasion it's been average to below average - depends on the cut of meat you're after. The chicken skewers can be a little light on with marinade as they are usually all stacked together and the marinade just poured over the top.

What is very disappointing about Lange's is the service - most times we've been there the girls behind the counter have been short and rude. No greetings when you walk in and quick answers to your questions without much emotion. Overall a very cold experience and not one usually associated with local, 'friendly' butchers. Try the butcher down Pleasant St a little further next to the Bunch of Grapes - he's your typical friendly butcher.
