As a Chinese, I have to say I'm normally very picky about Chinese restaurant in Australia. But I have to say I love the food at Mandarin Palace. Service is good, stuff are friendly.

Approximate cost: $20

Food - half star; Service - half star; Atmosphere - 2.5 stars.

"OH wow, a new yum cha place, we gotta check it out!"

The marketing (advertising-only) looked savvy; however, much to our
dismay, this restaurant was a monumental let down.

My usual rule of thumb is to only attend yum cha where I see lots of
Asians. I broke that rule: I have learnt my lesson.

On arrival we were seated quickly. The restaurant had only one couple
(white) already eating... later on we were joined by more white
people. Only one Eurasian girl was amongst the following arrivals. I
guess word has already gotten out about just how appalling this
restaurant is.

The yum cha selection was not on the traditional maiden-driven
trolley; but solely from menu, which was ridiculously small in range
and above average in price. At this point, I thought that the place
may be a little bit classier; the decor certainly suggested that an
Asian designed it thinking it would look classy (hint - if you do
accidentally go there check out the cheesy lamp coverings made from
glass to look like crystal).

The host, whilst well-meaning (I think...), had an insipidly
irritating quasi-Australian accent. When I complained about a raw-in-
the-middle dumpling (Siu Mai - or pork [supposed to have prawn in it]
dumpling) we were met with a facial expression from him akin to a
koala suffering from constipation.

We also had Wor Tip (they are normally dumplings wrapped in a wheaten
pastry with pleats and then pan-fried), which were lazily wrapped and
then deep fried. The filling was nothing to write home about.

The spring rolls were average.

The fried rice was only slightly better.

Value for money: the owners do not know the meaning of this.

My tip: go to an established yum cha house with lots of Asians.

When settling the bill I made use of an Entertainment Book voucher
(25% off) , yet still that was not enough to remove the sting of an
exceptionally distasteful experience.

Summary: Avoid like the plague.
