This restaurant is a small place located on the corner of Piper and Wedge Streets in Kyneton. The place offers Mediterranean inspired dishes and some fast food style favorites.

The restaurant is called Mrs Smith's Hotel Restaurant however there is no place to stay, it's just the name! The decor of the restaurant is centered around a fire place which is in the middle of the dining area. Old style wooden tables and chairs give a rustic feel to the place and is neat and clean. The menu is small, with a reasonable wine list. There are also a few tables and chairs outside if you like to dine alfresco.

We ordered a range of entree style items which were the Mediterranean bread with olive oil and dukkah, eggplant chips and calamari. All came out and were well received. The bread was fresh and tasty when dipped in the olive oil and dukkah providing a smooth light bread texture against the nutty texture of the dukkah mix. Eggplant chips were sliced lengthwise and fried with parmesan coated flour which looked like oversized frenchfries! The taste was so good we ordered two of these! The calamari was more of a bbq style, and we found it tasty - not overloaded in batter and not chewy - and as a result, light, fresh texture and a great creamy dipping sauce with a bit of zing from lemon and something else we weren't sure of.

For mains we had the lunch special of hamburger which came out as two large slices of pannini and a good serve of chips, and some salad. The hamburger patty was a bit of a surprise though, it was shaped more like a meatball and we had to slice it sideways to eat it in the bread. Flavors and textures were good and worked well with the salad and brie. Chips were fried not too heavily and were crispy on the outside with a good smooth texture inside. The other dish was a fritatta which again was a good blend of veggies and egg and some salad on the side.

The food did take a while to come, perhaps some misunderstanding on the part of the concierge, Michael that he thought we wanted to finish our entrees first completely, which were almost finished and we were all hungry waiting for the mains. We expected the mains to follow shortly afterwards and it did take a bit longer than expected - around an extra 15-20 minute wait. Michael was however courteous throughout the whole time and provided whatever else we needed quickly.

Price wise, everything was reasonably priced with the entrees around $9-$15 (calamari) and mains around $16-$19.

Overall, a pleasant place to spend an afternoon/lunch and have a chat with friendly service in a relaxing environment.

Approximate cost: $20
