I absolutely love the Pickled Cactus! It has become my favorite restaurant by far. From the second you walk in the door you take in the ambiance and there is always a smiling staff member not far away to greet you. The staff are always friendly and eager to please. After moving to the Gold Coast 12 months ago at first we found it really difficult to find new restaurants that we liked, after trying lots we came across this one. I just love everything about this place.....I forgot to mention most importantly the food is sensation. I love Mexican food and have tried hepas, and this has to be the best I have ever had. Keep up the great work everyone.

Approximate cost: $25

Thanks Linda for your great review and kind words. It is hard to please everyone but customers like you make it all worthwhile. See you real soon, Roz

Food good but not great! and friendly staff, but for me a big negative is that they have gone from a BYO to Licensed, with wines quite expensive.I will not be going back.

Approximate cost: $35

Thanks Carmelina for your review. We do have weekly food and drink specials for those on a budget. A bottle of wine at $21 for a Marlborough Sav Blanc we feel is very reasonable as is $19.99 for a litre of Sangria. Many many customers expect a licenced premises these days, so unfortunately we cant please everyone even though we try out utmost. We do allow BYO wine for $7.50 corkage, which is rare for a licenced restaurant. Roz

Approximate cost: $20

Excellent food let down by awful customer service. Getting told to shut up and drink your beer and being sworn at by the waitress is not acceptable. Its a shame because the food was really good.

Approximate cost: $25

Thanks for your review, I am really happy you enjoyed the food, stating it was excellent, which is what a restaurant is all about. I am unsure of your situation on the night but on discussing your issues with the staff, we would like to apologise if our words and actions were taken incorrectly and causing ou undue distress. One of my staff quite often is rather cheeky to customers and is sometimes misunderstood. However, if customers are overly roudy and obnoxious, under Responsible Service of Alcohol, we are required to ask them to be quiet and considerate of others as well as cease serving drinks if customers appear to have had sufficient drink intake especially if they are causing discomfort to other nearby diners. We do try to politely ask to think of others but unfortunately if diners are already intoxicated they do not always comprehend or understand this. Regards Roz

That young girl who works there needs a pay rise and was extremely polite, professional. She was the best part of out whole experience. We were the first customers of the day and our meals took over half an hour to come out. Can't understand why? Have read all the reviews and I thought my meal was very average. Hated the beans, salad was horrible, love salad, but not yours, who mixes raw vegetables in with salad, yuck, the Chimichangers (can't spell it) were dry as and salsa was just like runny tomato sauce. Would have loved melted cheese over it and chunky salsa with bits of tomato in it. Asked for "medium" but the chicken inside had NO taste or spice. Probably the worse Mexican food I've had, which is really disappointing as your reviews are so good about your food. Can only go on what I ate. The whole mean was so dry and tasteless. Can't say enough about the waitress. She was lovely. 10 out of 10 for her.

Thanks Norma for your review. Glad my waitress was awesome. Being the first customers of the day ... I am sure you would be aware that ovens, especially large commercial ones and deep fryers, take quite a while to heat up to the correct temperature to cook food at, thus the reason for your half hour wait. Each item also takes 10-15 mns to actually cook once temperature is reached. Chimichangas are filled with either shredded beef or chicken, with heaps of cheese, then crispy fried with a limited amount of salsa (the authentic way). Our salad is made fresh on the premises with heaps of yummy raw vegetables and is extremely popular with many many of our customers. Side options are rice and beans, rice and salad or salad and beans but we are happy to serve double rice if you disliked raw vegetable salad and our special black turtle beans. Meals are all served mild for those who dont like chilli as we need to cater for all tastebuds and we personalise the heat factor to customers wishes by placing salsa on top of the cooked food once it has come out of the oven/fryer. We are happy to make it hotter so long as we are asked. We also have a chunky salsa we can serve if requested but a smooth Ranchero Salsa is once again the authentic way to serve. Thank you

After spending 4 months traveling USA 30 years ago and tasting all the wonderful mexican over there was always disappointed in the Mexican fare on offer on the coast.
Finally have found the authentic Mexican deal, great food, lots of it and tasty margaritas and sangria.
Throw in friendly staff and very reasonably priced meals.

Approximate cost: $15

Great praise, thanks Tanya! WE do try to be as authentic as we can being in Australia! Wait until you see the different margaritas and cocktails coming on the new Drink Menu! Regards Roz

Best Mexican we've found on the Gold Coast! Service and ambiance could not be better. Prices are steep, but ingredients are better quality than usual.

Approximate cost: $22

Thanks for your great feedback.

Glad you enjoyed your experience with us. We do use only fresh and local ingredients, with everything made in our kitchen, resulting in higher costs. We may be a $1 or so dearer than some but, we feel, as do many of our customer, that our meals are well worth it. Doggy bags are given away for the many people who simply cant finish their meals, mexican is always good for lunch the next day so long as it is looked after as per our special instructions. We have introduced various new items to enable us to cater for all tastes and budgets. Thank you, Roz

Never eaten here before and not sure I will again. Perhaps I need to order something different but the sauce on top of my enchilada made it unpleasant to eat - far too rich! Like something on spare ribs. Service was great although not many people there. Layered dip was good! Yummy corn chips.

Approximate cost: $voucher

interesting.

Glad you enjoyed your dip and corn chips. Maybe next time order a meal with less ranchero salsa such as our yummy chimichangas, burritos or quesadillas. Bookings are always recommended to ensure best selection of seating.

We were on holidays on the Gold Coast and having just arrived, decided to get a take away - Mexican sounded good. To make a long story short, the food was disappointing. The tacos were full of salad, drowning out the meat flavour. In terms of pricing, my son had the kid's meal - Taco which was $11.95. However a starter of 2 Taco's was only $10.95 - One may argue that the kid's meal came with rice on the side but that was a very, very small tub - 3 spoons... on top of it, no sign of the icecream - if you're not going to give it for take away, why charge the same price?
On the positive, the Chili Con Carne was nice and plenty for the price paid ($10 as it was on special on Tuesday)

Overall, disappointing which was surprising seen the amount of good reviews...

Approximate cost: $11

Our tacos are full of fresh salad, vegetables and meats and are very healthy and yummy. Glad you enjoyed the ChilliConCarne special for $10.

Well it was good, my expectations were high, and did not dissapoint, I just wish I had chosen something else but the narcos the sauce was too rich, but overall it was very nice.

Approximate cost: $26.00
