Fantastic range of music, especially if you're into more independent and obscure stuff. Also sells concert tickets (to smaller bands of course). not as cheap as JB Hi-Fi, but at least you know that the people that work here actually know their stuff.

Approximate cost: $25

These guys know and love their music. Focuses on more independent and non mainstream artists. Huge amount of local(Melbourne based) and Australian bands, plus an equally huge array of every cool and interesting band you can possibly think of from anywhere in the Western world. Being a music loving mum with a pram, I have to warn you theres hardly enough space for breezy browsing. On a trivial note, this is a great place to go if you want to perve on spunky fey indie boys and girls! The service is fine. The vibe in there can make you feel like checking there is no spinach in your teeth, cos god forbid you do anything uncool in there. Oh it is also a great place to buy tickets for selected up coming gigs, and sometimes shows at bigger venues. Final word, JB Hifi may be cheaper but Polyester has stuff that you would not find there.

Approximate cost: $30

I bought a CD at Polyester Records last night. Be aware that it is well known on Brunswick Street that the owner (Chris) of Polyester Records is a very rude man who can be appalling in his attitude to customers. .ie bad customer service.. He directed comments at me of insult of a personal nature just because I was asking him questions about music in his store. He insulted me (the customer). I was told by another shop owner in the street a bi later when I inquired about his attitude that the reason Chris is sour at customers sometimes is because a record label he was running went bust. How does that in any way mean that he "Chris" has any justification for being rude to customers ??? As I said it is well known in the street that this guy is nasty. So I do suggest that you should shop elsewhere.

Had a conversation with the owner of Polyester records and evidently he had a migraine that evening and therefore decided to be rude to me as a customer. Everyone has a bad day so I accepted his apology.

This is the best place to buy CD's and records as the people there know and love their music with a passion. In this day age of downloads it's important to support music retailers like Polyester records.

I am sure he comes across nicely with some customers but be aware that if he is in a bad mood
you will get his ire.
He runs a business in a street visited by tourists
every day. He has a captive market. He did not set up the business himself it was set up by other people and then he bought it as a business move. He obviously loves music which is a damn fine thing BUT he can be ridiculously and arrogantly rude to customers.
If he were struggling in a small record shop around the corner he would not have this attitude.

It is not a good thing to character assassinate a paying customer and feel one has a right to do it simply because one can get away with it.
