The Royal Derby has majorly put itself back on the revered pub/bar map of Brunswick Street since new ownership took over a couple of years ago.
The food here is great. If you're looking for a decent pub meal, go no further. This includes one of the best Sunday roasts (that wasn't my Mum's) I've eaten.
I used to think Yoga and meditation was the best way to soothe my soul before heading into a weekend, but a select group of friends and I have recently discovered the Derby's Rib night on Thursdays.
I have eaten Ribs at some of Melbourne's best restaurants, as well as some major Ribs in Ohio, Kentucky at a traditional BBQ shack.
The Derby's ribs are easily some of the best ribs I've eaten, and I'm kind of a princess when it comes to food (this is one of the only pubs I'll eat at).
The 500g serve is enough for me, as they're also served on a huge plate of chips (side salad recommended). However, some (not even fat people) have been known to order a second 500 because they taste so fab. The price is the second best part (the first being the ribs), because it's like $15 dollars for 500g. I've eaten 4 Sushi rolls and a diet coke that comes to that. And the sushi wasn't even that good.
Anyway, if you're looking to eat Ribs of a Thursday night, go here. Take my sought after advice - I'm actually giving it to you for free, and most people pay for it. If you don't dig it, you probably don't know food that well. Plus, I'll probably be there, which is a bonus.

The Royal Derby is easily my favourite pub on Brunswick Street. Great service and food - Rib night on Thursday's is definitely a highlight....500gm of ribs with a massive serve of chips at only $15.00 - amazing value!

There is a warm, local feel to this pub and the staff are so welcoming that you will always feel at home.

Approximate cost: $15.00

We went with a party of a dozen for dinner. Keeping it brief, it was average - some meals were quite good (seafood linguini) and others not so (very pedestrian burger). The linguini came out about 15 minutes after the others so that suggests they simply forgot until we enquired. Staff were pleasant about it and offered a drink whilst the diner in question waited.

Ambiance wise, it was quite spacious and loud with about 30 TVs lining every available surface.

Two things I thought worth mentioning:
- Inner-city prices so dont expect a bargain
- Not setup for kids

Approximate cost: $20

This bar has many faces, and it's hard to know what to expect. If it's a quiet night you will find a local band, some comfy couches and a nice beer garden. If it's a busy night it's a completely different story... get ready to party!
Once my friends and I went on a busy night and there was a lady out the front only letting in people who were "cool" enough. We were let in (hooray) and found ourselves in a sea of the coolest people we'd ever seen, dressed in the edgy Brunswick St style and all having an amazing time.
Drinks specials and a groovin' DJ also ad to the appeal of this place.
