Some work mates and I enjoyed lunch here recently, porterhouse and chips were the go. Always reliable meals, perfectly cooked steak and crisp chips. Have enjoyed the fish and chips on many ocassions. A great family friendly pub with a large varied menu, great beer garden and even an area for your children to enjoy. My wife and I use to take our boys here when they were younger and enjoyed many great lunches.

We had another Port Elliot fish lunch here. Nice old hotel which is well kept and has a good pub menu. The fish and chips were well cooked and served and the salad bar enhanced the meal. Nice atmosphere with friendly country service. Outside seating in a lawned area for when the weather is friendly

We went to the Royal Family Hotel after reading the review below and thought it would be a great place for a meal. The outside tables and the overall setting was really good and the inside had that old charm about it. All was great until we got our meal. I don't often complain or criticise food but the meals for the four of us were very disappointing to say the least. Not one of the meals was satisfactory or up to our standard. One of our party had chicken and gravy and stated that the chicken was tough and grainy, another had the t-bone steak and he stated that it was as tough as old boot leather. My wife had the beef parmigiana and said that there was far too much tomato on it and the meat tasted not as it should have tasted. I had the atlantic salmon on a bed of chargrilled vegetables, well the vegetables were unrecognisable but a black slimy mush and the salmon was burnt on the skin side which detracted from the actual taste of the salmon. The salad bar was also very sparsely stocked with a very limited range of very basic salad. The staff were friendly all except one which looked as if she had lost $5 and found 5c. I asked to see the manager and related our disappointment to him and he apologised and told me he would speak to the chef, whether he does or not is out of our hands. One bright spot of the evening was the wine which was very nice and palatable. All in all a very disappointing dining experience and we will be seeking an alternative venue in the future.

Hi Grahamwendym, another brilliantly executed review that many will appreciate. While we were pleased to hear that the manager apologized and offered to discuss matters with the chef, he should have taken things a step further and offered you a discount. Thanks for the heads-up! Regards, Reeces

This pub is apparently over 130 years old, established in 1880. It is 2-storey, very well maintained and has lots of charm.
There are several tables under the verandah on the front footpath, overlooking the main street, then inside to the front bar and small pokies area, with a dining area behind.
We had lunch outside, in the back yard garden area. There is a large Norfolk Island pine with tables beneath it, and more out on a nice lawned area. There are seats and wine barrels under the back verandah, a large-screen TV, and in another corner of the lawn, a bbq, and a childrens playground in the other corner.
I had Moroccan chicken with rice and pappadum for $15. Very nice. Others had chicken parmigiana for $19. Average prices, some specials, various specials nights advertised for weeknights. The meals were served within 10 minutes, service was friendly.
Nice, relaxed setting, with a view out to the hills behind the Fleurieu Peninsula, enjoyed our Sunday lunch here.
