This museum has always been a great place to visit with children. They are fascinated with the different exhibits. However I agree that it could do with updating. It is free and has children's activities in the school holidays so it is somewhere to help entertain the grandchildren.

I have been here quite a few times now and have always enjoyed their exhibits. It's a great place to go in the hot weather.

I went here just the other day with a good friend of mine and although the admission was free, we still felt a bit ripped off. We were both under the impression that the lighting throughout the museum was quite poor (making it difficult to see the exhibits or read the writing). We both actually felt that the writing overviews on what was being exhibited was so small that we could barely read them at all. We also found that most of the descriptions were somewhat lacking and did not give a proper explanation of the exhibit. (Quite poor really.) I remember going to the museum as a kid and finding it really exciting to look at all of the interesting things displayed. Although now I find it just a maze of complex walkways with no clear direction as to where you are going (easy to get lost.) We actually gave up looking around after less than a couple of hours as we started to lose interest and felt so tired / bored that we needed to go straight to the cafe and get a caffeine hit! The main thing that saved this place from a total wipe out review was that the museum cafe was not too bad and had good, friendly service.

Approximate cost: $(free admission, but there is still always city parking to consider.)

Have been to this museum many times and it is always a great place to take the children as part of a day out in the city. I must say that I have seen some younger children get quite upset at the stuffed animal display at the front but everyone loves the underwater section. A must for everyone at least once and the grounds are fabulous.

I found this museum to be a little bit boring but since its free admission you can't really complain. Their collection of artefacts is not as big as Melbourne and Sydney museums. I didn't stay here for too long.

During these past school holidays I found myself back at the Museum with my girls it is one of their favourite spots to visit and since it is free it fits in well with the budget. The Egyptian room I always find disappointing as I was a bit of an enthusiast when I was at school but the girls loved it, I suppose I have just seen it so many times but no matter how many times I look at the stuffed animals near the entrance I can never get enough of them. The Indigenous exhibit and the interactive touch screens really enthrals me and my children and I really love the hands on activities held there is the school holidays but they can get very crowded. I do find the gift shop a little pricey but no more so than any tourist place the books are lovely there though as is the indigenous art work for sale. I do enjoy the grounds outside and the fountain we often sit there for a minute before we head off on the team to central markets for lunch. An enjoyable time is always had by all though if it was not free entry we probably would not go very often as the exhibits could do with a little updating.

The South Australian Museum is a great 'free' day out and experience for the kids.

In terms of other Museums we've visited, I do feel it is a little outdated in parts but the atmosphere and staff make up for it's short comings.

The last time I went it was better with some new and interesting sections. I would love to see them redo the animals at the front. I don't believe it has changed one bit since I went there as a kid.

Great lawn area out the front for lunch.
I like that the shop is to the side of the entrance so you can avoid it.
Easy to get around with stairs and lifts.
A little bit of a walk from parking but North Terrace is such a great strip to wander along.

This is a great free activity for the kids. My little ones especially love the dinosaur bone pit - they can dig there for half an hour. We held my son's 3rd birthday in the cafe last year - it was amazingly cheap (from memory $12.50/head) which included fantastic finger food for adults and kids, lolly bags for the kids and we took in our own cake. Fantastic!

What a beautiful experience to take your grandchildren to visit the museum. It is free so that is great. The displays are very well set out and the animal room is wonderful. There are guides stationed at each section and they are happy and ready to assist.
