splits new breakfast deal including coffee is simply fantastic! their are choices but my better half and i both chose fried eggs and bacon. sounds mundane but the couple running split really do understand food. the bacon is served on a slice of lightly fried toast and is of a very high quality. with this are lightly fried mushrooms and tomato and the olive oil is scrumptious. two more slices of fried bread and the large plate is overflowing. my wife had her coffee first but i ordered my flat white for after and as usual it was delicious. as split restaurant is quite compact we were able to listen to the other "breakfasters "and they were all very enthusiastic and complimentary. well done split this is brekky taken to a higher plane.

What a find!! This little gem in Moonah is definitely one I'll be returning to. Stopped in on a Monday evening on the way home from work. The place was nice and cosy, a few tables in use but not crowded. Nice ambiance so you could have a conversation without shouting.
I had the Hungarian Goulash and I think I have a new favourite dish. The flavours were fantastic and just a nice hint of spice. My wife went for the Ravioli and that was pretty impressive also.
Our host was charming and attentive without going overboard which great and the coffee at the end of the meal was one of the best I've had in a long time.
The only dampener was getting lemon meringue pie for dessert to find it topped with a banana custard that just didn't work.
Had the pumpkin soup with crusty bread for only $8.90, great value for lunch, service was fine when I was there.
This place is hard to describe - Czech/middle European "home-cooked" pub type fare is about the closest I can get. Some dishes are more adventurous than others and they are very proud of the seafood dishes. Definitely worth a try if you want something different. I had the goulash and my partner the cevapci. Small cafe, but was not busy when we were there (one other couple). Service gets rated down as the waiter was busy on his mobile yelling at his phone company, and he seemed harried even after that. Still not enough to deter us from going back, as he was friendly otherwise. Dessert was home made tiramisu, although it was a tad dry its still nice to see them try. If you like simple tasty fare this might be the right spot for you.

i dont agree that good comfort food is simple and nor is it "pub". their signature dish is the hungarian goulasch which is very authentic and takes hours to cook properly.
Meals may seem simple but it is the understanding of the ingrediants and the care with which they are prepared that makes some restaurants stand out above others! minor quibble though
Recently visited again and has improved in leaps and bounds. Note johnb62 comments is more than two years after mine. By pub fare I mean the menu looks like what you would see on the menu at a pub - take for instance "chicken schnitzel and chips". However the taste is different as the schnitzel is a breast, freshly cooked. It was very tasty. Service was great this time, I think it was the owner, very passionate about his food. Wine by the bottle is a little too expensive for my liking at about $27+ but it seems there may be corkage possible at $3 pp (may do next time). Definetely one of the better options in the area. Possibly the best aside from Kawasemi.
