Delicious food - love the wonton in chilli oil and combination fried noodles. Typical chinese restaurant.

My first visit to Taste of Shanghai Eastwood. I recommend Spicy Beef Belly Noodle Soup $11.80 - Excellent. When eaten right away, Xiao Long Bao (8 pcs for $10.80) is equally good - Just be careful not to break the skin when lifting & to take small bites for the soup that seeps out is extremely hot but tasty. The Diced Chicken Fried Rice in XO Sauce is so so & has nothing to shout about.

Its worth putting up with the poor service & being ignored because you do finally end up getting a good value, traditional Chinese meal at a good price.
My favourites are the pan fried dumplings, steamed/boiled dumplings and of course the xiao long bao (both steamed and the big pan fried type).
Extra good thing is that you can walk in & buy some of their frozen dumplings that you can cook at home - and get better service (unless someone has had a bad day at work).
Service not so good but the food is! Thats why we go back.

This place can get pretty busy - more like an asian market around lunchtime. Tables are very squishy and on this occassion we had to share a table with an elderly couple.

We ordered the steamed dumplings - beedf and basil and curried crab meat to try. I did like the crab meat ones but found the beef and basil one's lacked flavour and not enough basil in them at all.

Overall a good place for dumplings but try and come early to avoid the queue's.

Service can be abit lacking also.. but keep in mind it is popular with the locals.

My family comes here all the time, it's not far and the food used to be very good. I have high standards for food, I will admit, as I eat out quite frequently, but I like to consider myself fair.

The food used to be a lot better. There are still some nice dishes, but you can get nicer dumplings and far better service elsewhere. Prices have increased, but the tables are still too close together, with minimal table space for a Chinese-style setting where main dishes are brought out to be shared, and a bit of casual Tetris is required to fit all the plates on the table. Furthermore, during my most recent visit, I ordered a drink and was given a different one. When I asked the waitress, she mumbled there was no mistake, and left. When calling her back, she explained that they had run out, so she gave me whatever they had that was closest. I find it bizarre and I was unimpressed at the lack of option they had provided me with.

All round, I seem to get the impression that these people don't really want your business. They left a great first impression that's left me coming back time and time again, but the last time was just another trip that consolidated my opinion that Taste of Shanghai is going downhill.

I and 3 other friends dined there at around 7:40pm.
The conditions were that it was a busy night, but even in this case, food safety is a very important issue because the risk is food poisoning and that is not something to be taken for granted.

One of the dishes we ordered was the Garlic Chicken, item 611 in their menu, for $18.80 the pieces of chicken on the side of the dish was fine, but a large portion of the chicken in the middle of the dish, covered by fried garlic flakes, was revealed to be very red. on top of this, many of the pieces of chicken had sharp bones, and some were nearly completely lumps of bone, when we thought that it was a boneless dish.

In addition to this, no apology was made for the clearly undercooked chicken.

We have been coming here for ages, and have recently noticed the service and the food are not as good as they were before.
Firstly since the restaurant had undergone renovations (now with a more 'upper class' feel with fancy decor and seating designs) - the quality has deteriorated.
The food servings are much smaller despite the increase in prices.
The food no longer taste as nice. Yes, it's still nice but they used to be a lot better.
The service has not improved despite trying to be a 'better' restaurant. No one smiles, they rush about and slam food on the table and sometimes, not even bothering to check if they were serving it to the right table.
They want to be a first class restaurant but they don't bother put in the effort for it - one fine example is the use of old, chipped plates, bowls, teapots and cups.
Sorry, it's simply just disappointing and we've stopped going.

I used to go to this restaurant quite often as the dumplings are nice and the shallot pancake is beautiful. However, one time I was there, there was hair in our food which totally put me off. When I showed this to the waiter, he was less impressed and sounded like I was making it up. He was not apologetic and took the dish back and said in a plain voice "so you don't want to pay for it?" I found the attitude appalling so I haven't been back since.

They make the dumplings fresh from scratch, and you can see it thru the window. Authentic food and good value for money are the main attractions here. It is not a fine dining, so I won't expect too much just come for the food.

Approximate cost: $15 to 20
