Not recommended. A staff member measured up for a quote 5 weeks ago. Hasn't been in touch since and won't return my calls or texts.

I've noticed a range of comments on this website so thought I would share my experience with Update Bathrooms.

Firstly, I've never commented on a website / forum so think it's important that I make the following clear; I am a genuine customer (September 2015) and prior to starting the project had never dealt with / met / or even heard of Update bathrooms or anyone employed by them or associated with them. I found Update bathrooms online and am willing to back my words by inviting people to contact me to verify my comments and to see the before and after photos that I took.

Our story: among other bathroom firms that I won't shame, I invited Update Bathrooms to come and quote on a complete bathroom renovation. Our house was built 1905, a semi in Sydney, and the combined bathroom and laundry were in an absolutely terrible condition. The scope of the project involved knocking a wall out, all new plumbing for a new layout, new walls (battening and sheeting over the existing bad brick walls), a new door, install new windows x 2, a new ceiling (lowering the ceiling to 2400), a new floor, new electrics, basically what I would consider to be the most comprehensive bathroom renovation.

I was actually surprised when Kerry turned up for the quote on-time (the only company that did turn up on time). He then sat with me at the dining table to talk about the bathroom. We talked and brainstormed for an hour or two over ideas and configurations. I don't know if that's a regular thing that all customers get, or if it was because we seemed to get along.

Kerry used his iPad and typed up a price there and then and emailed it to me on the spot. The quote had allowances for tiles and things like the bath/toilets/cabinet/fittings etc. From that meeting, I formed the opinion that Kerry knew what he was talking about and a week later asked update bathrooms to go ahead with the work.

I paid a deposit and a few weeks later was given a 'pencil it in' date for the project. In the meantime my wife and I chose our tiles/components and were given a copy of what we chose.

As our house only has one bathroom, we were required to move out and we booked some holidays. Two weeks prior to the start date, I confirmed the install day and we went on holidays (nervously) the day before the commencement.

To me, safety and security are paramount so I found it difficult at first to trust tradesmen in our house in my absence. Update bathrooms didn't know this, but I prearranged my neighbour to be a super spy and keep an eye on the proceedings and keep me informed as to the progress and the tradesmen's activities. Each day she would do random visits and always found the tradesmen to be working in the bathroom doing what they were meant to be doing, and not sitting on the lounge watching TV or in other areas of the house where they shouldn't be. Both Kerry and my neighbour would separately contact me and tell me what was happening with progress and the two versions married up.

Hurdles.
The door: I'm both amazed and impressed of the effort spent in getting the door done properly. The wall (brick) that the door is in varied by about 30mm from top to bottom, ie, the wall is on a slant (not vertical). They did remedial work on the wall and door frame and discovered that some metal (a lintel) was needed above the door to replace a rotten piece of timber. Anyway the door looks perfect and is even hung with real hinges (not those rubbish quick fit hinges). There was a bit of complaining about it from Kerry, I don't think he realised just how hard it was going to be when he quoted it. I had to pay an extra amount for the lintel but that was discussed as the problem was discovered, and not a 'throw on' to the bill at the end.

Windows: They fitted two aluminium windows into the 100 year old double brick wall. The wall was on an equally bad angle as the door wall, but the windows are fitted perfectly. They even tiled the windows in - a look you'd expect to see in a hotel.

Tiles: They can't have the credit for choosing the tiles and colours (my wife gets that) but Update get the credit for the instal and craftsmanship. Only one tile wasn't perfectly aligned, but no one else can see what I'm talking about because it's behind the vanity.

Time frame. So you know I'm real and not telling tales, there is some negativity. The process took longer than expected and we had to live with the in-laws for a week after we got back from the holiday. I will say this though, a kind of modified version of a Benjamin Franklin quote: the sweetness of good quality remains long after the bitterness of any delay is forgotten (nowhere near as poetic but you get what I mean). Inevitably the delay turns out to be a positive as it's clear to me that Quality was never sacrificed by a push to finish on time, a genuine surprise given the project was a set fixed price and not pay by the hour.

The project took longer than expected, but the results are amazing. The walls are perfectly plumb, the floor is perfectly level and everything, right down to the smallest of details, is positioned perfectly and well thought out. These are things you get with experience and foresight. All rubbish was taken away (they left me some dust) and they used drop sheets!

The bathroom is perfect, way better than what we dreamt of.

Sincere thanks, and kind regards

Geoff King

We have been waiting 4 months to get a start date of our '2 bathrooms renovation. They said yes we can do this and we can do that. Ended up they've done nothing! I didn't see these reviews but if I had I wouldn't of paid a $4000 deposit! We've cancelled the contract. No way am I letting them in my home.
