I visit the Coles store at South Lake every week to top up my groceries, but my recent experience was quite disappointing. While using the self-checkout, I noticed that a staff member made eye contact with the security guard, who then proceeded to stare at me the entire time I was checking out. This continued until I left the store, and as I passed him, he said, "Have a good one," after watching me the whole time.
I found this behavior uncomfortable and unnecessary, especially since there were other shoppers in the store, yet I seemed to be singled out. It was disheartening to feel judged based on my appearance, as I was in my work attire and visibly tired. Meanwhile, others dressed in a more polished manner appeared to be ignored.
Having worked in retail for many years, I understand the importance of loss prevention, but targeting individuals based on assumptions rather than genuine concerns is unfair and unprofessional. This experience left a negative impression, and I hope Coles addresses such biased behavior to ensure all customers are treated with respect.
