My name is Janelle McManus my husband Peter and I have owned and run Price Attack Grand Central for over 10 years.
We have always run a successful store, but always felt the salon component of our store was not working to its fullest potential. We had the right people but weren’t getting the right results. Our salon manager was a keen hard worker who had been with us a few years as an apprentice then a senior hairdresser, we promoted her into the position and thought we would see results and that we could take the time to mentor her. Unfortunately due to many factors the most being lack of time on our part, the salon after 8 months still wasn’t doing what we hoped, after an honest self-appraisal realising we hadn’t been able to give our salon supervisor the tools she required to grow as a manager and to increase profit in our salon business, we engaged Monica from “LeapFrog Training”.
We sat down with Monica and gave her a list of our expectations for the salon and list of the strengths and weaknesses of our salon manager. I then stepped back and allowed her to work her magic. Monica and our salon manager meet on a weekly basis and our manager has been made accountable for the results. Monica started by doing personality tests on all our salon staff, this gave both of them to tools to know what was the best way to handle each staff member, they all responded to instructions in different ways and are also motivated by different things.
Our salon just hasn’t looked back and after 1 year we have seen a 26% growth which has been consistent every month. The team are far more positive and excited by the results they are getting. Our salon manager is a different person she is more confident, more positive and this both shows in her work and home life.  She is really a manager now. Due the fact Monica has worked in different fields with her training she had no preconceived ideas about the hairdressing industry, this has worked in our favour as Monica’s ideas have been fresh and new, things I have never seen tried with hairdressers in my 25 years in the industry. She also coped with myself and my salon supervisor saying “but they’re hairdressers they will never do that”, she has truly opened both our minds. Customer service is customer service.
You can only imagine as a business owner in what everyone is saying is such a tough economic environment, to be getting 26% growth in a section of your business is exceptional. Many other stores we talk to are struggling to get any growth. Peter and I could not be happier with the results we are getting and look forward to another positive year, with Monica mentoring.
