The Berkelouw wine bar is a smallish area upstairs in the Berkelouw book store in Leichhardt. From the street we noticed the grand piano and live singer and that's what drew us in. The waitress who greeted us was friendly and advised us that they would be closing an hour earlier than usual at 10:30 that night (we arrived at 9:40) she didn't however show us to a table. the menu offered a decent selection of wines and beers with a few fortifieds as well as chocolates, cheeses and coffee/tea. The prices were not cheap but not unreasonable for a venue with this atmosphere. We ordered Port, coffee and a cheese plate. The waitress returned to tell us that coffee wasn't available as the machine had been cleaned. This was very disappointing as there were 45 minutes before the venue was closing and the entertainment was still going. when paying the bill ($52 for just port and cheese) i handed over my visa card to be told that there are ATM's downstairs on the street. understandable if all they were serving was coffee and cakes but with sit down meal it's a bit poor in this technological age. The live entertainment, distractions of litrature and friendly service made the night but would not recommend it as a must. A nice experience and would return but would not rave about it just yet.
