A classic steakhouse, all wood grain with a splash of fine dining. Unlike some restaurants where it is dark and dungeon like this steakhouse is a more classy old school grill house with a pleasant ambiance and a surprisingly mixed crowd.
The menu is fairly traditional in what it offers, high quality cuts of steak, sides, salads etc.
The steak is of an amazing quality and perfectly cooked whether you prefer medium or rare. The sides and salads are designed to be complementary to the high quality meat, and enhance the star of the show.
Delicious and hearty meal, at a very good price point.

Simply put - the best steak in Australia. The starter plate is so tasty and grilled to perfection. The steaks have that wonderful chargrilled flavour and cooked to perfection. The stickydate pudding is light fluffy and has a sensational sauce. A wine list is impressive but expensive. A great experience

This place is one of my regulars. The steak is very good, not my favorite, but consistently good. The wine list at this place is amazing. Over the years I have become less and less satisfied with the chips (they started out as the American shoe-string style fries and now are just standard out of the packet ones). It is still a place I regularly go just because the steak is so consistently good and the wine list is amazing.

Overall the steak was fantastic - as you would expect. The let down is in the presentation and side dishes. It becomes a crime on your plate to serve a beautiful and perfectly cooked steak with frozen chips.... urgh! The cabbage salad is good. There are no steak sauces just cheap mustards.
To make this place a 5/5 all they would need to do is make the whole experience gourmet rather than gourmet with fast food sides. Simple - add some nice potatoes homecooked in duck fat; some onions or garlic.... work on a sauce? The Metropolitan Hotel in North Melbourne has this down pat - I would recommend that place for an all round satisfying experience. Hopefully Charcoal on the Hill will lift their overall game.

Charcoal Grill on the Hill is truly awesome. The steak is melt in your mouth tender, it's serviced with good fries, a yummy cabbage salad and cos lettuce - no choices, no expensive side dishes to bump up the bill - just simple fresh food to accompany the steak which is really the star. Be aware when you say how you would like it cooked that unlike most places I know they really do cook it as you like - a rare steak here is definitely rare!

The service is efficient and friendly without being stuffy. The staff have remembered us right from our second visit - and remembered details like the wines I enjoy which always impresses me.

The wine list is genuinely awe inspiring and best of all for me their list of wines by the glass includes some of the stars they sell. Usually wine by the glass is the volume stuff or the cheap end of the range but here the list changes monthly and the incredible wine knowledge of the staff means they've put together a range that begs to be tasted. I will always take Mark's recommendation on what to drink, he's always spot on!

Charcoal Grill is really in our top 5 restaurants in Melbourne, we love the staff, the wine and of course the food! Ooh and try the skinless sausages to start, they are soooo tasty!

Delicious steak cooked to your liking. Pick from Porterhouse, Eye Fillet, Rump or take your chances with the Wagyu. The wine list is the single most impressive one I've seen (over 700 to choose from).

The place for a steak and red wine! Choose from 250g and upwards and you have a choice of porterhouse, rump, eye fillet and more. All steaks are served with fries. The wine list is impressive and skip dessert and head straight for the cheese platter. Good, efficient service. The place is packed out most nights so plan and book ahead.
