Quite a decent place to have yum cha. The food was fresh. The premises were clean and affordble pricing as well. I thanked my friend after my visit for recommending the place.

I had a slightly contrasting experience. Don't get me wrong the place wasn't exactly bad, but I could only spare 3 stars.

Which night of the week did you visit? just curious if they're better on some nights.

I admit yum cha isn't one of my favourite, but that doesn't mean I do not appreciate good yum cha. Unfortunately the yum cha offered looked 'okay' but wasn't quite up there for me to write on about it.

Chinese dishes overall weren't all that bad, but again nothing to write home about at the price they're being offered.

Perhaps I'd see move value in the dishes if this place had slightly better ambience to it. I could not help but to feel that overall experience was on the 'cheap' side, with 'not that cheap' of a bill.

It wasn't one or two huge things that stood out, it was the little things, like the atmosphere, price, and so on.

I do see a potential with this place though. Who knows I'll return in a couple of years or if the management changes.

A Restaurant is often a crescendo of smell, sounds, ambience and hopefully climaxed with taste as the food. But let's say Chequer's illustrates why no composers like Bach, Mozart and Schubert come from China.

Conveniently located in the Cabrammatta of the North Shore, it is as if Chequer's has been composed by Chen Xitong (he happily butchers things like his own people). Atmosphere butchered, food if you want to call it that, butchered. Sounds of diners, like being in a packed butchers with buzz saws going, and the goal is to do nothing more than out scream the person sitting next to you, if you win that battle try the table furtherest away from you. Eating with your mouth open, is a must.

To be honest, just writing about the whole experience is starting to make me ill.

I ordered Chicken in Black Bean - if you haven't read any of my other reviews, you will see I always order this. Generally as a rule, you can't butcher this meal. But sadly Chequers joins the restaurant in Perth, Scotland to be the only restaurant to totally stuff up this simple classic Chinese meal. I am pretty sure that Chen Xitong would execute someone if he was served this meal.

The Black Bean sauce was watery and turned my rice into an oats like dish. My friends Chilli Fish (Snapper they reckon) was all chilli and no fish - there's "Flavour" and then there's just drowning something in a spice we scrapped off the insides of an old sauce pan.

Would never come here just to spend my enemies money for the sake of it. Well over priced as well, together with soft drinks came to $60 which put the meals at $25 plus.

Approximate cost: $26

Oh my we're dining here on Thursday. Hope they're not as bad as you described.

Hi Parge, thanks for an impeccably written (and detailed) review that many will appreciate. Regards, Reeces

The ambience is good and you can make reservations on weekends when the other yum cha restaurants don't accept. The food is not very good and lately the prices have gone up again. If you don't want to wait especially on weekends then this will have to do.

I was introduced to this place by a Taiwanese-born friend who really knows her yum cha. Have been going for years. Most recent visit was in February, the food wasn't as good as usual but service was the best I have ever had a yum cha- simply amazing!

Yum cha is quite nice here at Chequers. With good parking facilities and being very close to the station is probably one of those locations that attract many customers in its district and even beyond. The variety of steamed dumplings is good. I haven't had dinner here for a long long time now but from memory it was never disappointing.

Approximate cost: $5+

The food sold here would be typical food sold in Chinese yum-cha restaurants. There is quite a large range of food from which to choose from and it is better than many of the other yum-cha restaurants that I have been to in the past. The food is tasty and quite fresh overall.
