Common misconceptions about reward based training consults .

1  "Reward based training means I have to reward forever  and is a bribe . I shouldnt have to reward my dog. " And " I dont  want to give my dog lots of treats/ my dog is not food motivated ".

You reward a lot to start with to make  the association , but once your dog understands, which  happens  in minutes,  you fade the reward according to a certain ratio ...  A reward is  given for wanted behaviour you ALREADY  have . A "bribe" is given  to GET  the wanted behaviour in the teaching phase  .Trainers who claim rewards are"bribes" dont  understand the concept of counter conditioning or how learning happpens ....Trainers  who tell you not to reward your dog expect to get paid , why shouldnt your  dog ?.... Rewards can be anything that motivates your dog. If we are using food we  will usually use your dog's normal food  , but will use  some high value   treats  to start  with and to motivate your dog when the trigger  is especially hard to resist  or it does a job very well ....If you follow the method your  dog will be motivated .

2 "Reward based training means you never say no to your dog  and cant  stop it doing things "

Absolute rubbish ! Of course you can say no to your dog , and must stop it doing some things ,  but without causing pain or fear .And  telling it what TO DO instead is better than telling  it what NOT  to do ! 

3"You need to take the dog to the place where the reaction happens to teach it not to react . You can't teach the dog not to react to other dogs  except in a class or place where the reaction happens "

Doomed to fail  unless you resort to  severe punishment . You must CREATE  the tool BEFORE  you can use the tool !Dogs need to be taught in a familair environment  with low distrations  at first . Once  they understand , you increase the distractions . I always arrange  for a trigger  to come  to the home  during  the consult  so I can show the owner and dog  what to do in a controlled situation  . Once we have taught the dog a new association  the owner can  increase the  triggers .The reactivity techniques work fast !

4 "Your dog must respect  you and know you are alpha- you must  domininate your dog  ."

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. This attitude will create aggression or fear . Every dog I have been to who bit was hit yelled at or dragged by the collar ,or worse .If  your dog  doesn't bite, it may lick and crawl to you , but that is appeasement ("dont hurt me " ) , NOT love .Don't bully your dog. And let's not even get started on instruments of torture - chokers , prong collars,  shock collars .There are better alternatives .

5 "You cant teach all this in one day , it will take weeks ".

Creative learning  ,where your  dog is encouraged and rewarded for thinking and  offering behaviour,  is shown  to achieve desired  results  literally hundreds of times  faster   than traditonal rote learning .I teach you and your dog what to do , the dog understands  and is doing it  in minutes , then you practice , following the method , and permanent  change happens in days weeks or a few months  ,depending on how much you practice . Most of the learning happens organically  without boring training sessions, just as children learn to speak . 

PS a note about the dogs pictured. Top- fast asleep after training session-thinking is tiring! Bottom- this dog's owner was told he would never be good with other dogs by the RSPCA trainer.  He hadn't left his yard in years because of his aggression toward all other dogs on sight. One consult followed by practice by his owner using the reward based methods  I taught her to keep him calm, change his perception of other dogs,  and keep him focused on the owner, and here he is enjoying a walk with a dog he has never met before. (He is wearing a head collar. It is not a muzzle.)
