I had first phoned a most lovely Lady who was ever so helpful. she wandered out into the nurserty and found what it was I was searching for. It was absolutely no trouble or effort.
when I rang to follow up and try to purchase this particular plant, the next two people I spoke were blunt, short and obviously imposed upon and and i found them to be of no help at all.
And where I had planned to go and dine and experience the whole diggers club thing in November when i am down for a conference, I now certainly shan't bother.

I love the Diggers Club! I have been a member for a couple of years. I like to grow the heritage and hard to find fruit and veg and these guys make it so easy to buy it from home and have it delivered to my door. Everything I have bought from them has survived. Their seeds have good germination rates.
I hope they stay in business for a very long time, so I can continue to get the products I am after!

I have been a member for at least 25 years and drool over the magazines even though at the moment I am unable to plant a lot in my unit. In that time the club has grown enormously as has the quality of it plants - 25 years ago they were spindly and small - now they are fully fledged plants which represent real value for money and which always survive - the packaging is great too so you can order with confidence. I thoroughly recommend Diggers for those who want something a little different - and they have excellent support available.

My cousin joined us up to the diggers club as an early Xmas present and we love it, they send us a mag and seeds to plant. They specialise in hard to find seeds and we love the challenge of growing something different in our vege patch. The mag is so informative and it explains things in a way we can understand. We will certainly be renewing our membership when the time comes

The hubby turned 40 and I wanted to take him out for lunch, I wanted it to be somewhere he had never been before but also it needed to be special, impressive and fitting for a man of his age (tehehe). At the Foxey's tasting a few weeks back we again met up with Peter who runs the Fork to Fork restaurant at the beautiful Heronswood garden and historic National Trust house in Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula. The house on the slopes of Arthur's seat was designed in 1866 and built in the 1870s is a stunning bluestone Gothic style mansion, but was designed as a family house so inside is quite intimate and homey. Bought by the Blaze family of the Diggers Club the gardens are amazing, some of the biggest trees I have ever seen including a Moreton Bay Fig for which the word massive is an understatement! The gardens are extensive and very established, well worth the small fee to explore. The shop has everything you'll need to create the perfect veggie patch or deck yourself out in gumboots and gloves, they also stock a range of books which are all based around growing and cooking produce.

I visited the gardens some time back with my friend Deb and her mum, I was in my twenties then so all I wanted to do on a sunny Sunday was find the nearest beer garden, but I was suitably impressed with everything, if memory serves I had a char-grilled veggie stack which they grilled in front of you on a BBQ. Since then they have built a thatched roof building with exposed timber beams, beautiful timber floors and open kitchen so everyone in the small but lovely room can see what the chefs are up to. Also there is an extensive outdoor area which is paved and bathed in sunshine….obviously only when the sun's out.

Home baked bread and olives
Once at our table we had a chance to look at the impressive menu, most of the fresh produce, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and garnishes, here in herbivore heaven, either grow up around you or are sourced from producers in the region. Whilst we were deciding the waitress delivered a small house baked cob loaf along with olive oil for dipping and marinated Ridge Estate Kalamata olives, which were warmed and absolutely divine. Perfectly matched to my glass of Foxey's Hangout Pinot Gris, I awaited our next course. For starters we shared the amazing mussells with kale possibly the best mussels and broth I've ever tasted and trust me I've had lots! I then settled down to my main which arrived in good time, heirloom beetroot, walnuts, mizuna, poached duck breast with honey and rose reduction, oh my, I don't remember eating such fresh and beautifully prepared produce. My hubby chose the slow cooked beef with root vegetable stack and watercress salad, which I savored a small morsel and of course he wouldn't give anymore away, we also ordered platter of mixed produce and goats curd which showcased their home grown produce in all it's finery. During our enjoyable visit to Fork to Fork we sampled different wines from the impressive list, Foxey's Hangout and Moorooduc Estate to name a couple, and of course these vineyards are within 15 minutes of Heronswood.

If you are looking for somewhere to take the family visiting from interstate or overseas this is the perfect place, also kids are very well catered for with plenty to see and do. With Spring here and summer just around the corner Heronswood and Fork to Fork can't be missed.

Approximate cost: $120

thev best bit about these guys is browsing the catalogues. extensive range of seeds with pictures. reasonable but not cheap prices, provided you buy several items together (due to postage). the membership is not that good value unless you buy a lot.

My husband and I wanted to get some heirloom seeds for planting in our garden after our (very healthy and prosperous) summer tomato crop left us with good looking but completely bland and tasteless tomatoes. While you can certainly order the seeds online, my husband thought it would be fun to make a day trip to the Mornington Peninsula and go to The Diggers Club nursery at Heronswood Gardens.

The nursery certainly has a very large offering of plants and seedlings. They also have a few interesting varieties of garlic for planting and a huge complement of seeds (mostly heirloom, some hybrid) as well. We bought some garlic and several packets of seed, as well as some peat pots (which were quite cheap at $3.60 for 30 small pots).

The service wasn't as good as I would have expected from staff who work for a gardening club. We asked what I thought were some pretty basic questions (we're not exactly beginners but we are still learning) and the answers we received seemed a little confused and not very clear. The experience certainly didn't inspire us to spend $50 to join the Club.

I will note that they were kind enough to give us permission to bring our small dog into the nursery (leashed) as the day went from cool to quite hot and we really didn't want to leave him tied up in the sun.

I can't speak for the quality of the seeds yet, but I'll certainly provide an update once we've got something to taste-test!

We love our membership. Fantastic value for money and wide range of heirloom seeds and bulbs. A great way to start the switch to organic and sustainable vege growing.

I am a member and I do got to Heronswood a few times a year.
For buying seeds, potatoes and garlic and I do recommend them.
For buying plants - I find them very expensive for what you get!!

I'm going to go against the grain and say my experience was sub-standard at best. The seeds and seedlings were sub-standard, the postage exorbitant - however the advice online is very good. I would recommend many other services before this one though!
