The BEST steak I have ever had. It was cooked exactly the way I asked. The service is fantastic and the overall experience was wonderful. If in Ballarat, I would recommend having lunch or dinner here. Thank You Campbell and Joy.

Wow! What a great night out. Excellent food, great wine and friendly, attentive service. Our steak was cooked perfectly and at a starting price of $29 + sauce were very reasonably priced. Desserts were delicious with a broad and exciting wine list. Amazingly friendly and engaging staff topped the night off - we had a fabulous time and can't wait to return!!

I wish I'd heeded J3V's review, but thought we'd give them another chance having not been there for 5 years or so. Wish we hadn't. Rubbery, frozen, imported-tasting scallops, bland sauces (the bearnaise was served chilled and tasted like it had come straight from the jar- the vinegar fumes nearly blew our heads off!), rancid-tasting oysters in the carpet bag steak, vegies limited to a greasy 1/2 potato, 4 overcooked snow peas and 1/2 a plain grilled tomato. The steak was OK, but could have done with a bit of seasoning. Cooked pretty much to order, but we did see other patrons returning steaks for under/over- doneness. Very disappointing given the prices ($38 main course + $4 extra for the sauce and that was a mid-priced main), the restaraunt's longevity, and their so-called specialisation in steak. I can only think (like J3V) that the reason Dyer's has survived is due to patronage by friends and unsophisticated diners with low standards and expectations. Pretty dismal.

Hi Katew8, thanks for such a well written, detailed review. When one enters a specialty restaurant (like a steakhouse), it is a reasonable expectation that your respective meat would be ‘competently’ cooked according to individual requirements. After all, testing steak (for its respective doneness) is not rocket science and should be a basic requirement for such an establishment. Unfortunately, there are several Ballarat based businesses whose longevity appears based on the patronage/support of family and friends. It is because of this connection that some ‘local’ reviews fail to adequately reflect the quality and standard of meals presented. Quite often, it is only when an ‘outsider’ visits (who has no connection or history with the respective business), that they see the business for what it truly is. Being vegetarian, we have not visited the afore-mentioned establishment and therefore are unable to comment on the quality of the meals (or service) on offer. We can however state that the owner of the respective business also (amazingly) owns Asahi, which offers one of Ballarat’s best ‘fine dining’ experiences. Regards, Reeces

I took a group of overseas business clients to Dyer's recently and was very impressed. The steaks were cooked to perfection. The wine list was second to none and the fact that there is a large selection of "wines off the list" with varying vintagtes, varieties and cost impressed my guests no end. I in particular had the porterhouse which was sumptuous. Many of my guests had the pepper steak I tried the sauce and it was to die for. nothing is too much for the staff and I couldnt ask for a better experience. Thanks so much! I will be back as soon as I can.

For real? I had the bearnaise sauce last night and it was chilled, straight from the fridge and, I suspect, straight from the jar. Very poor indeed, especially for the price.

I think people still go here simply because of lack of options in Ballarat and because it's been around for so long. Our steaks tasted like budget steak - they were even kind of "pastey" - completely gross. My husband has never sent back anything in 20 years and he sent back his steak. Each time I go I swear I'll never return, and this time I mean it.

If you know good quality restaurant food, which to be honest you don't find a lot of in Ballarat - you will know that people who say it's fantastic don't have a whole lot of experience in quality food.

My Dear Madam (would you prefer to be called that) Firstly to claim TIM1 has no life is just darn right wrong. Correct me if neccessary but were you or were you not the first to comment on this website. Infact one is prepared to go as far to guess you probably wrote this on returning home to your cold, lifeless house in where you had nothing better to do then complain on a website. Madam if you claim to have any knowledge in the resturant world then you would know the hardest and most sought upon attribute is consistency. Simply put no resturant could surevive 37 years without a landmark amount of consistency. Further if you claim to be an expert then why not like most people who find a problem with anything adress it with the staff. I am most sure that any resturant - never lone one of 37 years- would be willing to ensure your satisfaction is met at the very least. Ultimately complaining on an internet website after nothing can be done will never solve anything and i am sure that perhaps if you entered Dyer's once again without the predjudice you obviously embody perhaps your experience would be not only satisfactory but most pleasant. No person or resturant is perfect. However 37 years of consistent service and satisfaction does not lie. Does it Madam.

Hi J3V, thanks for a well written review. Almost any fool can compose a ‘two lined’ (positive) review, but it takes greater effort (expertise and restraint) to compose one with (negative) content. We can only assume that (some) members avoid composing such reviews because of the fear of retaliation and inflammatory remarks, like the one mentioned below. Irrespective of this, ‘negative’ reviews are every bit as vital as the ‘positive’ ones, maybe even more so, especially when one considers that a prospective consumer may be saved from a loss of time, effort and money by avoiding an incompetently run business. Although we are unable to comment on the restaurant in question, we appreciated your honesty and candor. Regards, Reeces

Warbz: the length of time a business has been in operation is irrelevant when it comes to a review pertaining to food quality and customer service. It is unprofessional to insult another member, just because you (personally) disagree with their comments. This type of defensiveness makes you sound more like a disgruntled manager, than a paying customer. In addition to this, your second-last comment is erroneous because if you had of taken the time to view J3V’s account, you would have noticed that they have already submitted (positive) reviews (for other businesses), which means they do indeed have the capacity to be satisfied by the level of food/service offered by other establishments. There is no need to be petty just because you disagree with another member’s comments. Reeces

went to Dyers for our anniversary dinner and were warmly welcomed and helped through the menu. The place has a great atmosphere and the food is second to none. It's more pricey than other places we have been but it's worth it for the customer service, quality and cooking of the meals and the experience itself.

Approximate cost: $30ish

Dyers definately know how to cook steak!! I really enjoyed my whole experience at Dyers, where the restaurant has a very relaxed feel to it. A word of warning though, you would definately want to have steak for dinner if you go to this restaurant!!!

If you love steak and I mean really love steak, Come to Dyers! They really do it well and I don't mean "Well Done" as they say here "Steak should be seared in order to seal in the natural flavor and retain the natural juices". so "Our chef contends that this is best achieved in rare to medium cooked steaks and respectfully suggests to those who visit Dyers to try MEDIUM or RARE at least once." I had Pepper Steak with Brandy Cream sauce and it was just magnificent! Priced on average at around $25.00 per steak unless you order the Monster Steak at a whopping 1.5lb and costing around $50.00 you wouldn't go as often as you'd like but trust me you will go back as I have.

Approximate cost: $25.00
