1 review about Gumnut Cafe

We went to late breakfast at the Gumnut Cafe in a group of 8. We went there as some of the group had discount vouchers for breakfast (through living social). We had pre-booked but when we arrived they seemed surprised & did not have tables ready for 8. I would expect this to be set up in advance as we had booked, however, it was a quick matter of bringing another table & 2 extra chairs to add to a partially set table for 6, which the waitress did, with an apology & explanation that she had started her shift 10 minutes ago. There was not sufficient cutlery set at this time but again this was fixed pretty simply. The venue was pretty kid-friendly (we had one child in the group), not specifically set up for kids but there were not many other people there & they were tolerant of the noise our group made, & a reasonable amount of space between tables made the seating fairly comfortable.
I think there were 8 items on the breakfast menu (sorry I cannot remember exactly) but they were happy to add extras to a dish even though some of us were using vouchers, so that was a reasonable start. However, whilst the waitress was friendly & was trying to serve, there was not much she got correct, & the communication between her & the other staff/kitchen was also a problem.
The coffees came out slowly, one was room temperature by the time it got to the table. The others were reasonable but again she was confused, calling a caramel flat white a caramel latte (a plain latte had been ordered) & when we tried to work out which it was she said "I don't know what they are, she" (the person making the coffees) "just told me it was the caramel one". A couple of times she brought items to our table that were meant for another table (which was sorted out after some confusion as to what the coffee actually was etc.) Also, it took them about 15 minutes to come back to tell us that they were out of orange juice & ask would apple juice be alright.
The waitress took orders for breakfast (food & drinks) from each person but was very confused about who had ordered each item, & more significantly, what we had ordered altogether. She came back not long after she had taken the initial orders to check what we had ordered, as she thought she only had 7 orders, then realised that one of the dishes had been ordered twice. (This was big breakfast with mushrooms, there was also a big breakfast without mushrooms that was listed separately, more on that below). For 2 dishes we then requested that the eggs be cooked firm rather than runny. The waitress came back not long after that & said it wouldn't be possible for the poached eggs to be firm as they were already cooking, when asked 'but can't they just cook it longer?' she replied 'oh yeah!' with a startled expression. Unfortunately this was not done, these poached eggs were still very runny. In theory it was not a problem for the other eggs (fried) as requested to be firmly cooked but they also arrived runny. When a scrambled eggs & bacon came out she asked was this the 'eggs & bacon', or 'bacon & eggs' (still not sure exactly what she was asking).
Some of the toast was so undercooked as to be still like bread.
The menu listed eggs benedict as being eggs on English muffins with spinach & hollandaise sauce (which is actually eggs florentine, however), as listed it suited me, seeming the best option from the menu, as I am vegetarian. However, when they brought it, it had ham on it. Later I saw that on the blackboard they had listed it with both spinach & ham but this was not on the menu & the blackboard was not easily legible from the table. They were happy to replace it for me which was great, but when they brought out the new dish it had mushrooms on it & no spinach! Very disappointing, but by that time I did not want to return it a second time.
The worst of the experience (I don't usually write a negative review but this, coming after everything else, tipped the balance,) was that one of our party is very allergic to mushrooms, he had ordered a big breakfast, had stressed that there must be no mushroom as he was very allergic & the waitress had noted this on the order. Unfortunately when the dish arrived we saw that mushrooms had been fried with the eggs, as on his plate there was mushroom fried in to the egg white. We sent the dish back, explaining that this would make him seriously ill, & were told we could either have a refund, or have a new meal made but that it would be quite a wait as there was a backlog of orders (I think there were 3 other people there at the time) & their orders would be made first.
Overall this was a disappointing experience & I will certainly not return.

Approximate cost: $6.50-$13
