This review is for Pho Phu Quoc, Dickson ACT

I preface this by saying we were looking for something very specific and also have some dietary restrictions due to allergies. However, when I phoned, the person seemed really accommodating (even checking ingredients) so I had hope. Turns out the service sounded good but wasn't on follow through.
I specifically chose Pho Phu Quoc based on a review of the caramelised pork (especially images of it). We were (still are) looking for a caramelised pork that has a sticky, sweet, reduced, not thin, sauce. The staff member said it wasn't usually a runny sauce but that she would ask the chef to make it even less so, less sauce, however what we received was extremely wet. lt was also a pepper sauce rather than sweet (based on ordering from other Vietnamese restaurants I didn't realise I had to check that).
I called to express how disappointed we were and was told "that's the way we make it" regarding the pepper and "sorry, it shouldn't be that way, hope you enjoy your meal" regarding the amount of liquid, I was fairly startled by that, appreciating the apology but it felt very dismissive for her to say hope you enjoy your meal when I was specifically saying we were really disappointed by it (we hadn't eaten the meal at this time, so didn't know other things were also disappointing).
In another dish the vegetables were fresh and lightly (nicely) cooked but the bean curd was chewy (in an unpleasant way) and the dish was very oily.
The entree satay sticks were dry (though it did take us a little longer (about 15 mins) than optimal to arrive there to pick up our order, it shouldn't make such a difference so rapidly).
Towards the end of our meal we discovered 3 small pieces of mushroom in one of the dishes - which we had specified was an allergy and asked to have none included.

Wouldn't recommend it.

Worth the drive if you are on the northside. I went to the Homestead Café last year with a large group for high tea, and went out again yesterday with a small group for late breakfast (they usually stop breakfast at 11am but with pre-booking allowed us to be a little later). Both times have been seated out on the verandah (they have braziers for heat as required) and appreciated the amazing view of the mountains as a backdrop. The service was prompt and attentive without being intrusive, despite them being busy (don't necessarily expect a great deal of elegance, you will get straightforward though). I would definitely skip the coffee (my espresso was poorly made, and my sister had to try twice to get a weak coffee, the first time was stronger than usual!) but the food was enjoyable.

Whilst the Spirit of Beauty Salon provide so much more than waxing, that is what I usually go there for. Emma (owner) is friendly, considerate, and sympathetic (waxing is pain, so you want someone to be nice to you while they do it!). Emma is excellent at what she does, and very efficient! (Her employees are lovely also).
The salon is always spotlessly clean and Emma pays careful attention to hygiene.
My only regret is that I forgot to mention Spirit of Beauty on WOMO sooner! They may not be the cheapest (though I think they are competitive) but totally worth it, and worth the drive!

I have ordered (online) through discountink for years and always found their products to be great, delivery super fast, ordering process simple and prices very good. Today I had my first ever issue with a cartridge (Canon Compatible) and the customer support was excellent. Would recommend discountink to anyone with a printer!

This review is for Plumb Works, Canberra ACT

verified email - 15 Mar 2013

I had Gary from Plumb Works fix some taps for me late last year and was impressed by how quickly he got the job done, and how well he listened to me about the problem (unlike someone I had in previously... and Plumb Works charged less!) I was even more impressed when I had to call him out to fix our backed up pipes this week (oh yuck, a backed up toilet is NOT nice, I didn't envy him his job that day!) He arrived on time (and that was quickly after my call), did a great job (with a magical machine that bores through the pipes), and checked that the job was done properly before he left. Good price. Straight forward information about the issue (tree roots).
Highly recommended!

This review is for Kevin's Place, Holt ACT

My husband & I love Kevin's place - often for takeaway, though we have dined in as well, the two of us through to large groups (up to 20). The service is always very friendly and helpful, they are willing to modify dishes for us, the food is good (Vietnamese & Malaysian) & also cheap... & they make the BEST salt & pepper eggplant (even people that won't normally go anywhere near eggplant love it!)

This review is for Canberra Air Duct Cleaning (Capital Duct Cleaning), Calwell ACT

verified email - 11 Sep 2012

I booked Canberra Air Duct Cleaning/Capital Duct Cleaning to clean my ducted gas heating ducts (which, due to the previous occupants of my house, were in dire need of cleaning). As far as I know they are the only business that provides this service domestically but that has not made them complacent about service. Allan and his assistant were friendly and courteous, did a thorough job of cleaning (goodbye horrid smell, goodbye lots of rubbish!) and also replaced the intake filter (which the previous occupants had destroyed), and gave me advice for proper care of it.
Unfortunately Allan also discovered damage to my ducts (sadly looks like the work of a neighbours cat) but he showed me the ducts, explained the situation to me, and on the spot gave me a quote to repair, a time for his return to do so, and advice on how to protect the ducts in the future. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they were genuinely nice, helpful people to deal with (in booking and the two visits). Price quoted was price charged. I don't really have any comparison on quality or value as I have not had this cleaning/repair done before (first house with ducted heating) but they seemed to use good materials and it seemed value for what they did. I would certainly recommend them!

This review is for Gumnut Cafe, Hall ACT

verified email - 04 Aug 2012

We went to late breakfast at the Gumnut Cafe in a group of 8. We went there as some of the group had discount vouchers for breakfast (through living social). We had pre-booked but when we arrived they seemed surprised & did not have tables ready for 8. I would expect this to be set up in advance as we had booked, however, it was a quick matter of bringing another table & 2 extra chairs to add to a partially set table for 6, which the waitress did, with an apology & explanation that she had started her shift 10 minutes ago. There was not sufficient cutlery set at this time but again this was fixed pretty simply. The venue was pretty kid-friendly (we had one child in the group), not specifically set up for kids but there were not many other people there & they were tolerant of the noise our group made, & a reasonable amount of space between tables made the seating fairly comfortable.
I think there were 8 items on the breakfast menu (sorry I cannot remember exactly) but they were happy to add extras to a dish even though some of us were using vouchers, so that was a reasonable start. However, whilst the waitress was friendly & was trying to serve, there was not much she got correct, & the communication between her & the other staff/kitchen was also a problem.
The coffees came out slowly, one was room temperature by the time it got to the table. The others were reasonable but again she was confused, calling a caramel flat white a caramel latte (a plain latte had been ordered) & when we tried to work out which it was she said "I don't know what they are, she" (the person making the coffees) "just told me it was the caramel one". A couple of times she brought items to our table that were meant for another table (which was sorted out after some confusion as to what the coffee actually was etc.) Also, it took them about 15 minutes to come back to tell us that they were out of orange juice & ask would apple juice be alright.
The waitress took orders for breakfast (food & drinks) from each person but was very confused about who had ordered each item, & more significantly, what we had ordered altogether. She came back not long after she had taken the initial orders to check what we had ordered, as she thought she only had 7 orders, then realised that one of the dishes had been ordered twice. (This was big breakfast with mushrooms, there was also a big breakfast without mushrooms that was listed separately, more on that below). For 2 dishes we then requested that the eggs be cooked firm rather than runny. The waitress came back not long after that & said it wouldn't be possible for the poached eggs to be firm as they were already cooking, when asked 'but can't they just cook it longer?' she replied 'oh yeah!' with a startled expression. Unfortunately this was not done, these poached eggs were still very runny. In theory it was not a problem for the other eggs (fried) as requested to be firmly cooked but they also arrived runny. When a scrambled eggs & bacon came out she asked was this the 'eggs & bacon', or 'bacon & eggs' (still not sure exactly what she was asking).
Some of the toast was so undercooked as to be still like bread.
The menu listed eggs benedict as being eggs on English muffins with spinach & hollandaise sauce (which is actually eggs florentine, however), as listed it suited me, seeming the best option from the menu, as I am vegetarian. However, when they brought it, it had ham on it. Later I saw that on the blackboard they had listed it with both spinach & ham but this was not on the menu & the blackboard was not easily legible from the table. They were happy to replace it for me which was great, but when they brought out the new dish it had mushrooms on it & no spinach! Very disappointing, but by that time I did not want to return it a second time.
The worst of the experience (I don't usually write a negative review but this, coming after everything else, tipped the balance,) was that one of our party is very allergic to mushrooms, he had ordered a big breakfast, had stressed that there must be no mushroom as he was very allergic & the waitress had noted this on the order. Unfortunately when the dish arrived we saw that mushrooms had been fried with the eggs, as on his plate there was mushroom fried in to the egg white. We sent the dish back, explaining that this would make him seriously ill, & were told we could either have a refund, or have a new meal made but that it would be quite a wait as there was a backlog of orders (I think there were 3 other people there at the time) & their orders would be made first.
Overall this was a disappointing experience & I will certainly not return.

This review is for Morks, Florey ACT

verified email - 24 May 2011

Had dinner at Morks this evening and was very impressed. It is quite a small restaurant (and popular if tonight is indicative), so I would certainly recommend booking a table (glad we did, even though it was only earlier today that we did so).
I went with 3 others, I'm vegetarian and they all eat meat. They shared 2 entrees between them (chicken satay and crab balls) and I had an asparagus dish (which was very tasty but quite small). We each ordered a main and by the end thought we probably could have skipped the entrees, as the main serves were generous (and next time I will leave room for dessert!)
The quality of the food was fantastic, with a lovely variety of flavours in each dish, though too spicy for some (remember to ask them to tone down the spice if you are not fond of chili, for me the heat was quite mild).
The service was very helpful and friendly. I was very pleased when they agreed to modify a dish on the menu to make it vegetarian for me (and did a superb job of it) and came to check that we were happy with everything.
The prices were a little more than I would expect, especially for a suburban restaurant, however it was worth it! The takeaway prices are quite a bit less and it is a very different menu, though (having seen the takeaway menu in advance) one of the mains we ordered was from the takeaway menu (at a slightly higher price) and they were happy to do that. I highly recommend it and look forward to going back.

Approximate cost: $20-25

The service was polite and quick, though they had many customers we were through the queue quickly and the food was served very quickly. The food was fresh and tasty and a good price (have put in satisfactory as price, as they are very similar to other noodles in a box style take-aways for price).
