Quality Nd service here are great but I would not say they justify the price. I can get a full lunch for the price of some of the snacks there.
I went for different Baclava and whilst I thought it was better than average it was not wow.
Approximate cost: $8
I came across this shop on Lonsdale Street and was struck by the attractive display of cakes and sweet treats in the windows. I thought all the items looked amazing! There were almond and pistachio baklavas, triangles of almond cake, and all sorts of tempting goodies.
I purchased a chocolate hazelnut round. I'm not sure what its exact name is but it looks like a large cookie, studded with hazelnuts, with its edges coated in dark chocolate. The cookie part and chocolate tasted very good but I thought the nuts were a bit dry. It was more expensive than I thought: about $6.50. However I could only eat half of it as it was very dense so I left half for my partner. He said it was delicious but then said the nuts were somewhat stale.
I think rosep1 hit the nail on the head when they mentioned the 'mountains of unsold items' in the windows. It's such a pity because I think if there were less items with faster turnover, then they would be fresher and customers would have a better experience. I could not fault the taste of the item as such, just the freshness. What a pity. Some of the cakes looked delicious, but I can think of other sweet treats far better and cheaper than these.
I had no problems with service. Both staff members I saw were nice and friendly enough however I was the only customer in the shop at the time.
I don't think I will be coming back until I see a better turnover of the items in the windows. If you do visit, I think it will be hit or miss as to how fresh your item will be.
PS. Mind the step at the front, it's elevated from the street and I missed it both times when entering and exiting the shop.
Approximate cost: $6.50 for a choc hazelnut round
Tops review mate, spot on
Hi Champagne, thanks for such a useful review. Rancid/stale nuts are never acceptable, regardless of price! Thanks for the heads-up! Reeces
At first glance the cakes here look impressive. I found them to be over priced for the quality and taste. There wasn't a great range and the service was lacking.
I honestly couldn't find anything to recommend about this cafe/pastry shop. The service is not friendly and virtually non-existent. Orders are taken at the counter, and the staff serve you with a countenance that can is at best distant if not surly.
As for the cakes & pastries themselves - the mountains of unsold items displayed at the windows should be sufficient warning. All of the items ordered by our table lacked the difference in texture and taste that is evident in fresh items. Whilst the large display and variety is very tempting, I would go elsewhere for a more pleasant experience.
Sounds like a place I should definitely avoid
Hi Rosep1, we appreciated reading your review and like the others, the problem area most prominent centers around freshness or lack thereof. Sounds like a place best avoided! Regards, Reeces
I have been here a few times - attracted by the window filled with sweet delights but unfortunately I have not enjoyed the food sold here. With take-away cafe prices I would be happy to expect the quality to be the same but sadly I have had stale cakes and biscuits here. The service is friendly, the sweets look good but that's where all the goodness ends. Always nice to walk past but would appreciate fresher stock.
It's a great pity I didn't read this review before. Would have saved myself an unpleasant experience.
Thanks for the heads-up Blushingbride. Reeces
One of my favourite Greek cake shops along Lonsdale Street. they have a good variety to suit all tastes.
Friendly service by the staff
the backlava (excuse my spelling) is my personal favourite
Hi MazB35, given that your experience differs so vastly from others on this (and other) websites, we wonder whether the business might have had a change of management. We too adore a well made Baklava. Yum! Regards, Reeces
Its greek so it is good... if you love your sweets you have got to try this one... it is next to Stalictites which makes it easier to find on Lonsdale St. Just try pronouncing the food in greek they love it. If you cant say it then ask... I was told if I pronounced the biscuit I wanted in greek they would give it to me free... I will try again next time because I was too embarrassed... and I am half greek ...
Hi Maleena, while we appreciated reading your comment, just because a business is Greek (or any other nationality for that matter) doesnâ??t instantly make it a good one. In addition to this, given the vast Greek populous, I doubt it would be financially viable for the business to offer â??freeâ?? product for those capable of correct pronunciation. However if this were the case, then it would undoubtedly be a good gimmick for the business concerned. After all, who doesn't love an expertly crafted Bougatsa, Yiaourtopita, Kourampiedes or Baklava, etc?! Regards, Reeces
