My family found Johnathon's Cafe/Gallery while out driving on a beautiful sunday afternoon, a couple of months ago. At first we had just driven past this quaint little place and it really caught my wifes eye. So on our way back past we decided to call in for a coffee, cake and to have a look at what sort of artworks where in the gallery...

We pulled in the driveway to the sound of a jazz trio playing amongst the grape vines and were instantly curious to what we might find inside. We were not disappointed.

Entering the premises your eye is immediately drawn to the impressive glass art. We were greeted by a lovely young chap who turned out to be the owner, and seated in the court yard surrounded by vines and lush pasture. Serenaded by jazz we enjoyed several lovely coffees with our cakes, and left with a selection of local produce.

Although the menu may be small on retuning for dinner recently we found our choices to be delicious and well priced. Once again we left with bounty for the pantry having experienced a warm and friendly evening in front of the fire.

The venue is bright and airy, great little gallery, the staff friendly and attentive. The both lunch and dinner menus are of exceptional quality, and loved the local produce, oils, fudges, breads and best of all 'Yarra-Valley Ice Cream'.

Approximate cost: $20-27

We first went for Breakfast on Mother's Day when Johnathons had only been opened for a few weeks. It wasn't great, they obviously had ring-in staff for the busy day who were unprofessional and overfamiliar (a hand on the shoulder when being asked what coffee we wanted wasn't so funny the 4th time). So we gave them another shot for Sunday breakfast a few months later - much quieter morning with only two other tables busy and yet they still managed to muck up the coffee order (there were only three of us and there was a notepad involved!), the bill and the service was slow. It was also cold and we were seated directly by the fireplace.

The food is only of average quality (for Breakfast there is only a choice of two dishes) - I can't comment on Lunch or Dinner, but for food that's nothign special I'm not sure why you'd bother putting up with the poor service or risking a visit during a busier period - it's not even comical for an entertainment factor.

Approximate cost: $10 for breakfast
