While passing O'Halloran Hill we stopped here for some Pink Lady Apples. They were large but not blemished and were half the price of those in our local supermarket. They have many well priced products and if you are nearby it is good to investigate.
I have been regularly purchase fruit and veg here and never had any issues, always fresh and delicious, the staff could be a bit friendlier though.
After reading the previous review for this fruit mart it has made me a bit more vary of them, so if I return I will certainly be checking my fruit and veg for any issues.
They would have been forced to smarten up their act after the numerous complaints the council said they had received. Mine wasn't the only complaint investigated and I was told that other complaints were also found to have validity. I had already stopped buying fruit they sold sitting outside as most often it was revolting. The fresher fruit inside was all I ended up purchasing which happened to be where the apple was with glass imbedded within. It was glass similar to that from a light bulb.
I recommend not going to this business. There was glass imbedded in an
apple. Thank god it was me who bit into it and not my kids.
* * *
When I bit into a royal gala apple that I purchased from this store, my
teeth crunched down on something very hard and brittle. It was glass!
I have been a regular shopper at this store for years, but when I notified
them I was treated appallingly, dismissed, mocked, and even accused of
placing it there myself. Having noticed a slight imperfection/breakage in
the apple skin prior to biting into it, at first I thought it was gravel.
With fragments in my back teeth and throughout my mouth, I tried to spit it
all out but I couldn't see any gravel. Then I looked more closely and only
then realised I had bitten into glass! The apples had been neatly stacked
upside down in the store, hiding the damage on the apple which had been at
the top of it. I had put several into one of their thin plastic bags where
it stayed until the text morning. I took out three apples from the plastic
bag for myself and my children's lunchboxes and immediately noticed the one
with the small skin breakage. I washed it and could see no dirt so placed
it in my new spotless handbag. I purposely didn't give it to my children as
they would have screwed their noses up at it, whereas imperfections in
fruit don't usually bother me. Of course after realising it was glass, I
immediately called O'Halloran Hill Fruit Mart to let them know what I'd
experienced. The person I spoke with responded in a contemptuous manner
stating it wouldn't have happened at their shop because there is no glass
and what did I expect them to do about it. Shocked by such a demeanor, I
suggested that concern regarding the incident would be a good start. I was then
invited to bring the apple in so they could examine it. After contacting a
doctor who told me to eat bread to absorb the glass I'd swallowed, and also
the school to request they remove my daughter's apple, I arrived at the
fruit mart. I was ushered out the back where the staff could see for
themselves the small amount of glass remaining in the apple. I was offered
a replacement apple and my young son was offered a free fruit bar. I
declined, instead requesting to leave my details for the person in charge
to contact me. He didn't. I called at lunch the next day to speak to the
person in charge. He stated he knew about the incident but didn't have my
details. I informed him about what happened. His response was even more
callous than his staff, showing zero care factor and implying that I was
making up stories when I tried to discern plausible explanations about how
glass could have gotten into the apple. The person in charge also asked
what did I expect him to do about it. I told him I expected him to consider
looking into staff practices and suppliers practices. His response - their
apples come through 5 sets of hands before reaching him! I stated the fruit
isn't exactly market fresh then. His final comment was to laugh, then
suggest perhaps it was one of my diamonds that had fallen into the apple
before hanging up on me. Unbelievable! To say I am disgusted by their
practices, their lack of regard for glass being in food they have sold, and
their contempt toward loyal customers is an understatement. The council has
been informed and will be investigating their food safety practices.
Oh no! I was very disappointed in reading your review, I have been purchasing from these guys for a while now and never had any issues. I am quite disgusted in how you were treated and would love to know the outcome. I will inspect all my furture purchases, that is if I shop here again, not so sure now.
Update...
Having contacted Onkaparinga council regarding the glass I ingested from the apple purchased at O'Halloran Fruit & Veg shop, I was relieved to learn they took the matter very seriously!
In fact they took it seriously enough to conduct an unannounced, comprehensive health and safety audit within the week.
I received confirmation feom the health and safety department that the investigation proved my complaint to be valid and justifiable. When I called to find out the outcome I was pleased to learn there were consequences omposed on the business. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the exact details of these consequences were as the system was tranferring to an electronic database and the files were not completely accessible at the time.
I haven't returned and am pleased to spend my weekly $40-$50 veg spend on fresher produce elsewhere.
As I was in this shopping area I visited this large fruit and veg store. Wonderful apples for a good price and a wide selection of various priced fresh foods. Worth a visit when passing
We often pop in when in the area, always quality fruit and veg
I often stop here on my way home or when passing by at lunch time. They have some fantastic specials going all the time, I picked up 2 dozen large eggs for only $5 the other week, as well as mushrooms for $5.99kg and 2 punnets strawberries for $4. Excellent value and quality, made my wife very happy.
Even though I live in Reynella and there are fruiterers closer, I always go here, because the value is so good. You get specials that are just amazing from time to time ($1/punnet for strawberries on day!), but they are just very reliably very affordable. Great quality. Only problem is it is a bit squishy in there, but it's well worth it for the price and quality.
The prices and quality here are great, very handy on my way home.
Went in here to buy some flowers. Lovely cyclamens in gift wrapping - just what I was looking for as a house warming gift.
Looks as though all the produce was extremely well priced. Will go back later for fruit and veg.
Approximate cost: $14.95
Always busy which means good turnover of produce. Good choices and fresh fruit and veg however the service is usually lacking. The store never seems to close which is good for us.
Great deals nice people, opening hours are convenient.
never received bad service once even when they are very busy
Approximate cost: $50
I was tipped off about this place by a friend. Its amazing the fruit and veg are so cheap and really good quality. the staff are friendly. The specials they have are really amazing we got 5 kilos of potato's for 99c last week!!
A very busy store, quite crammed. lots of variety & prices to boot. ranging from top quality fruit & veg to second grade cheaper produce. Staff are helpful with queries
Approximate cost: $varies
Very friendly and helpful staff. Not quite the range you get in the city or bigger shops but it is great having it nearby. Some of the prepared chicken and other pre-prepared dishes are quite nice.
Love this place - we only buy our fruit and veg from them now. There is a great range and when they have specials - WOW, they are incredible. They sometimes have local home growers stock too which is nice.
It can be hard to move around the store because it is so busy but they stay open longer and have so much quality produce that it's bearable.
I used to work for this company, i still buy my fruit and veg from here most times, i think the quality of food is above all of the rest
This place is amazing. It feels like they are always open much longer hours than other fruit & veg shops. Great quality fruit & Veg at great prices not to mention how much longer their produce lasts compared to supermarket. They must turn over alot of stock making the products always fresh.
Approximate cost: $20
I would be lost without this fruit market. They far surpass any of the fruit and vegies found in the supermarkets. Try leaving mandarines out on kitchen counter for a week. Supermarket ones would be mouldy, but the quality from O'Halloran Hill is great. Produce lasts longer, tastes better, looks better and they have the best value nuts in the south. They also open really long hours at xmas time making it easy to shop before work. Its hard to move around the store, but this inconvenience is overcome by the great food. Problem is I spend more than I intended, because I can't resist buying extra
Approximate cost: $25
the people are very friendly and they have the freshest food in the area. parking is great, convenience for 9-5ers on the way home and they offer you help when you look like u need
Good quality fresh fruit and veg. There are regular bargains depending on availability of produce if on a tight budget or more expensive varieties. Because it is so popular there is a good turnover of produce which then lasts longer at home. The staff are friendly and efficient. It has a market type atmosphere. I prefer there to a supermarket.
What a great business to recommend to anyone. The produce is very good. As we are vegetarian we certainly test many vegetables. The staff are very friendly and if you ever have to question about quality they are always happy to assist. Wonderful people.
I like to use a local Greengrocers for my fresh fruit and veg as I feel the fruit and veg is than the supermarkets.
I've always found this little place on top the hill to have a good range of produce and never had a problem with the quality.
The prices seem to be very competitive and you always get service with a smile.
They also do cheaper bread and stock yummy natural lollies, liquorice etc
A produce place where fruit and vegetables are fresh and taste wonderful. Prices are fantastic and the staff are really helpful and friendly. I definitely will be going back again soon.
a great shopping experience, plenty of products at very affordable prices. i found the staff very helpful and willing to go out of their way to help out. cant wait to return next week for the freshest produce!!
Their produce are definitely affordable and also, mainly fresh. Service can be improved but their range of produce is amazing ranging from exotic fruits to the basic ones.
