Cafe/restaurant located inside the NGV.
Unlike most dining venues that are attached the iconic visiting attractions, this restaurant is not lacking in polish, atmosphere and menu inspiration.
Style wise, the menu is continental fine dining without the top shelf prices.
For example, our table ordered items such as Burgundy Braised Beef Short-rib, Snail Cassoulet, Golden Raisins, Parsnip & White Chocolate (main) and Chocolate fondant with Croissant ice-cream, Rice pops & Popping Candy (dessert). Portions were just right and everything was beautifully & artistically plated.
The menu is creative, without being too adventurous on the palate.
In terms of atmosphere, Persimmon is lovely. Housed towards the back of the NGV, it is like a hidden secret.
Natural light streams in through the windows that line the length of the restaurant, and diners have a view out to the garden. A very serene place dining backdrop.

We found this bistro to be an ideal place for a leisurely lunch after the Napolean exhibition last month. The views of the NGV are stunning. The food and wine was superb and we will definitely be visiting again. As it is so popular, we suggest making a table reservation during peak art gallery times.

This is always a popular choice when I have visitors from out of town or those who enjoy a quieter dining option. The food is well presented, with good variety, and the 2 course lunch menu is great value at around $40 for 2 courses + a glass of wine. The ambiance is peaceful and relaxing - a real oasis in the midst of the city. Great to be able to view some lovely art before or after your dining experience. One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne - note: open for lunch only
