I attended this bakery to buy a loaf of rye sourdough. The bakery was a popular spot so trusted to buy a loaf to take home. Found the loaf to be so hard ---like a brick---had a major difficulty cutting a slice--very hard work even with an electric knife---I thought a chain saw might be efficient but don't use such in my kitchen. Anyone with a disability would be in great difficulty cutting this bread. Great taste though--once you fight through it.....

Approximate cost: $8.

Well worth the drive, off the main street, down a side alley but not hard to find. Coffee just delightful and the cakes and slices lovely. Take a freshly baked loaf of sourdough off the shelf , all bagged up in brown paper bags home. Great setting.

A small drive on a misty, miserable day brought us into Trentham. We stopped at Red Beard for a spot of lunch. The tasting plate for two was divine, with beautiful varieties of sourdough to go with olives, chutney, prosciutto, salami and dip.
The chai latte was made using their own blend syrup, and was nice- probably a little too sweet for my tastes, as I prefer a more 'loose leaf' authentic type of chai.
My husband enjoyed his coffee, and said it was 'better than average' by city standards.
A change table and high chair made it family friendly enough for us to be able to enjoy our lunch and clean up another poonami *sigh*
We left with a 'brunette' wholemeal sourdough loaf; five different cookies, and a chocolate eclair.
The chocolate eclair was the best one I've ever had. Pastry was perfect, and the chocolate was beautiful.
The biscuits were nice, but at $2 each, I could leave them.
Highly recommended if you're in the area.

I've tried their bread a few times and it is really nice sourdough. They sell their bread at quite a few regional farmers markets. My only disappointment was last time I purchased their bread from the market in Daylesford, the crust was quite burnt. They also offer baking workshops at their bakery in Trentham.
