Contrary to some comments obviously left by opposition business or sour people, I have ALWAYS found staff and on- hand owners extremely pleasant. Food is always fresh and it is all baked on the premises.
Their Easter buns are to die for as are the vanilla slices. Best in Melbourne says my taste buds.
You can buy a paper and have your lunch in peace.

Sue you are so right, when businesses serve hundreds of people a day year in year out and only get a bad review once a year it is often a disgruntled ex employee or someone who just goes around making people miserable all day every day, Luckily there are also people who go out of their way like you to do a nice thing when they can see human beings trying their best Under sometimes trying circumstances. Cheers to you :))

After a relaxing massage next door, I popped into Red Poppy Bakery for a quick squiz, and ended up spending lunch there. The cakes all look to be locally handmade, the prices are very competitive, and the staff remind you of old school lunch ladies. There is none of this uniformed stale presence. All the ladies were of a mature age, and very warm and welcoming. The chicken schnitzel I had in my roll was well cooked and very tasty too. Highly recommend!

This is our local bakery. They make EVERYTHING! and I do mean, everything. They have the most amazing pies (awesome chicken pie and my partner loves the cauliflower cheese pie)
The sweets are also beautiful. Everything is always fresh, you can get a sandwich made on site too.
the staff are gorgeous and friendly and the coffee isn't too bad also.

This bakery is not really a bakery - its a cake shop and its so cool - like going to grandma's or your mum when she used to bake for you at school. Basically everything's made here - its not the kind of place (like those in Oakleigh) that seem to have 5 star hotel chefs turn out beautiful, perfect but tasteless works of art. It's real and since I've moved here I love it and tell all my friends. The staff do a pretty good job considering how busy it can get and how hard it is for people to decide (quickly) what they want - just too yummy to do so no matter how many people are waiting!

I love the freshly baked food from here. I have to wait in a long queue because the place is very popular but we are served efficiently and the wait is worth it.

I normally don't leave negative comments against a small local business, but in this case I have to make an exception. During the short period I frequented this establishment, the overwhelming vulgarity of the older female staff members left me dumbfounded.
I drew the line when the ignorant middle-aged female employee with shoulder tattoos graphically discussed the relationship she was having with her new partner in front of my two young boys-absolutely disgusting!!!

Apart from that, their “pre-heated” or should I say “RE-heated” pastries & pies often tasted stale and dry, which didn't justify their inflated price.
I now take my business to a café in Ormond, where the service and professionalism displayed by their staff put the Red Poppy to shame!

I love to support local businesses but only if they are worth supporting. The food in this bakery can by old and very overpriced. The white loaf does not taste nice and the service can be shocking. Went to buy a bagette and the lady made 4 coffees for the person in front of me which took approximately 10 minutes and did not even acknowledge me standing there. (There is a younger lady with long hair who wears it in a ponytail however who is very friendly). The food is also quite pricey for what it is and a friend brought some banana cake which had mould in it so you take your chances how fresh it is going to be.

This is a very cute cakes and pastries shop. It is really delicious and there is a variety of yummy treats to choose from. Its also very good for celebrations, birthdays and functions as they have good catering. The coffee is also above average.

Well known in the neighbourhood for quality cakes and pastries. You can stop by for a coffee and afternoon/morning tea. Serving sizes are good, not too large and home baked. Great fruit pies. Highly recommended.

Great little bakery right near hughesdale station. They do rolls, sanwhiches, pies, cakes, reads, your usual fare, but they also carry a good range of gluten free products. I've always been happy with food and service form here.
