St John of God hospital in Ballarat. Floor1, Room135 dates 7th April to 14th. I would like to thank the team of people who cared for my elderly mother during this period. Starting from Jenny at Dr Ho's Ballarat Medical, picking up the slurring and confusion, who rung me with concerns, acting very quickly. Chris thank you for organising meals on wheels (a big hit hooray), the district nurse visits, home care house cleaning and an assessment for old age care package today, as this would not take place with a very determined Mum. Heidi for chasing me to let me know, what was going on and why mum had confusion:) To all the nurses who where so kind to mum in a week of very stressful events at home, you made her feel so welcome, very comfortable and the after care has been amazing. Thank you will not and does not quite cover what you do each day, but I send the best of blessings to you all. Dr Kemp and Dr Ho, also play a huge part in keeping Mum on track. Thank you all soooooo much with kindest regards Melissa

I had both my babies at SJOG...they were amazing. I felt cared for at every moment of my stays. Wonderful hospital and staff...I felt they really had me and my new babies best interest at heart. Highly recommend this hospital.

The staff in the accounts section are very helpful, the nursing staff are dedicated and caring. However St John of God is very, very expensive. Especially for someone without private health insurance.

They charged the full rate for everything, which all needed to be paid upfront. The refund did eventually come back, but they had use of my money for over a month, which no doubt earned them some interest.

Approximate cost: $4000

My husband went in here for day procedure, that could not be done at a public hospital. Overall we were very happy with service, but we were a little overwhelmed with paper work about the costs before the actual day. Turning us into nervous wrecks if visit was longer then that afternoon, about the costs that could be incurred.

Approximate cost: $varies

I've found them very costly too, and the requirement to pay upfront well in advance of any procedure is also an added burden at a stressful time.

Hope your husband feels better!

My 5 year old Daughter has just had a tonsillectomy at St. John's, and I couldn't be happier with the care she received. I was so well looked after from the moment we got there, till we left. I was never left feeling like I didn't know what was happening, all the staff were super friendly, helpful and professional. My daughter and I were at ease the whole duration of her stay. Thanks so much!!

I have had colonoscopy + gastroscopy twice, sleep test twice, knee replacement and angiogram at St John of God.

Colonoscospy and gastroscopy are usually day procedures but I have other health issues and usually stay overnight. Administrative personnel and nurses were professional in their work greeting me and taking me to the right place at the right time. Afterwards a friendly face greeted me when I woke up and took me down to my room. The nurses offered a friendly word while they did their observations, gave me food and my daily pills. The nurses kept a check on me to see that I was ok. The next morning after breakfast I was discharged and went home.

For a sleep test you arrive at the hospital at the end of the day, find the sleep lab and meet the nurse who takes you to your room where you get ready for bed. For 'Part 1' when you are ready to go to sleep the nurse attaches you to lots of wires on your body and on your head and then you go to sleep. The next morning the nurse wakes you about 6 am so you have time to shower and shampoo out the gunk use to attach the wires to your head. Eat breakfast (cereal & milk) and you are out by 7 am. While you are sleeping the nurse watches your brain waves. The nurse has been friendly and professional but there is not much time for conversation as she has 3 people to settle each evening and 3 people to awake each morning. 'Part 2', about a month later, it all happens again, this time using a CPAP. This gives you an opportunity to try different masks to see which suits best. About a year later I went back for another 'Part 2'. And will probably do another next year.

My right knee was replaced about 2 years ago. My stay in hospital was 2.5 weeks. They had me out of bed taking a few steps the same day. Every day I went a little further. It wasn't long before I was taken down to rehab for exercises with the physios. When they decided I could get up and down steps safely on crutches. discharded me to home. Twice a week I went back for outpatient rehab. When they decided that was all they could do for me some months later they discharged me entirely.

As the angiogram was done through the wrist, it was a day procedure. I was sedated and when I woke up, they gave me a sandwich and a cup of tea. And when I was fully awake they sent me on my way. All were friendly and professional.

All my hospital costs were covered by my health insurance. This includes the cost of the new knee. Don't know how many thousands they've paid, but it's been many.

Costs of the surgeon, assistant surgeon and anesthetist are a different matter and not covered here.

In general hospital food is pretty ordinary. But at SJOG the kitchen is in the same building so corrections or additions can be made with reasonable promptness.

Approximate cost: $nil out of pocket
