Perhaps a little too trendy for me. Very nice atmosphere. Food was fair but service was very slow and distracted.

Wow, what a cool atmosphere. Café surrounded by cool timber market stands selling donuts, fresh lemonade, strawberries and more. Fresh flower market and pet farm for the kids to keep occupied. The Café on the weekends can get quite busy, but grabbing a takeaway coffee from one of the markets is great, and we got this takeaway burger that was so good :)

The Grounds is an institution. Looks so unassuming from the outside, but it's fantastic. I recommend the coffee (great blend), the green juice and the banana bread. Super-duper yummy! :-)

A fun and friendly atmosphere combined with amazing freshly made food makes this place so unique. The milkshakes were top notch and the variety of dishes on the breakfast and lunch menu was great! Extras were expensive though (half an avocado, $5) but the food itself didn't need it. Serving size was average but the quality was very good.

Approximate cost: $18-20

Do Not Go on the Weekend! Its insanely busy! Very popular and with good reason, the food is great and the place looks like hipster heaven. Saturday and Sunday its soooo busy that you will wait. So if you have kids or are in a hurry or want fast service its not for you.

If you want to watch the crowd, soak up some sun and generally be surounded by coolness, dive on in.

Midweek this place is heaven for young families. They have animals, a playground and lovely coffee for sleep deprived parents.

Agree with you on the weekend! We love this place too.... great food, amazing coffee, love the markets and my kids love the animals!

So true! We placed a reservation but came late, and we had to wait half an hour for another table!

The Grounds at Alexandria is definitely a unique dining experience, if you want to do something different for the day, make a visit here. It is an old pie factory which has been converted to a trendy cafe, farm area with animals, outdoor eating area with an awesome deli next door and lots of stalls selling fresh lemonade, bread, treats and flowers. I have been here a few times now and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The cafe is pretty cool, but be warned it is incredibly popular and you will need to arrive early and put your name on a waiting list. Yesterday, I was disappointed to see a couple of people get special treatment with regards to the waiting list because they knew the staff member taking down the names & numbers. The food is fresh and delicious, and it is worth the wait. The staff are efficient and accommodating. Parking can be fairly difficult. Overall, The Grounds is awesome and worth checking out.

It was a very unique dining experience. The place was nicely decorated and they have like a farm and kettle around the place. The food was really nicely presented and it taste very delicious. For the price-wise, I won't say this is cheap or average, but it rather a bit expensive and that's is depends what you ordered. The service was excellent and speed was average.
Overall, if you are looking for some place that is unique and fresh, then this is one of them.

Have used The Grounds on numerous occasions including lunches for up to 20 guests. At all times the staff have been friendly, accommodating and very helpful. This aspect, along with excellent food & coffee and a unique inner-city setting, make The Grounds a must visit for any Sydneysider.

Approximate cost: $17.50

This seriously has to be one of the most amazing and unique cafe's I've ever been to in Sydney, located on the corner of Huntley Street and Bourke Road! They have queue's of people everyday and believe me the wait is worth it. This place is huge with large communal style tables, chickens running out the back, heated and lush dining area serving breads and pizza's. But inside is where I like to sit where they basically have 2 large rooms divided by the takeaway counter and yummy cake display, with the bakery and kitchen area nearby. It used to be a pie factory before being transformed into this cafe complete with it's amazing garden full of herbs and veggies, coffee research facility and kid's area! The barista also mentioned they hold " The Grounds Markets" here on the first weekend of the month where you can buy directly from here - fresh cured meats, rolls, flowers etc. My kids love the animals especially the pig named " Kevin Bacon".

The brunch menu here is pretty good but i do like the Grounds burger which comes served on a brioche bun with beer battered chips and aioli dipping sauce. The desserts are delicious too - so many choices, but the lemon tart is hard to say no too!

Very relaxed vibe here, great staff! The only downsides I've found are wait time's for tables and parking is a nightmare to find nearby. Certainly not hard to see why this place is popular with local's and Sydneysiders - I drive an hour to come here! Recommend for all!!

The coffee is immensely popular here, with queue's forming to have their daily caffeine fix. The coffee is full flavoured and has depth, which is good for the soul.

It was a bit crowded at the time when I went there. But it is worth the wait. It is so relax to sit in their garden. The food are fresh and tasty. Remeber to try out their rose water lemonade, best drink I have ever had.

I discovered this place just the other day - it's a little piece of paradise in the city! Despite the noise because of how busy it was, the food was fantastic, the service was great, and the atmosphere, decor and design are amazing. The grounds, gardens, interior design, and Kevin the pig make this cafe/restaurant one of my very favourite.

Wow this place is busy! But it is a great place to have breakfast. We went on a Sunday morning and the place was buzzing. This place offers two distinct dining areas. There is the inside table service area which allows you to order from the full menu or the take away menu which you order, pay for and collect and can sit in the wonderful outdoor area (which frankly on the day we were there was brilliant as the inside was noisy and packed).

It was raining on the day we went so we couldn't really experience all the Grounds had to offer (that is checking out the place) but from what we saw we will def be back. Will probably aim to be there at opening to get in and out before it really gets busy.

It is a great place for all groups of people from families to the trendy DINKS.

Despite it being busy, the service from the take away counter was relatively fast and friendly. It is a little on the pricey side but that's probably because its good and there really wasn't anything else open.

The coffee was really good and the almond and chocolate croissant (who knew you could get almond AND chocolate!!) was absolutely delicious!

Approximate cost: $25 for two large coffees, plain crossiant, almond and chocolate croissant and a smoothy

Found this cafe via google as a kids friendly cafe. Went there on a weekday morning. Love the outside area - it is big, garden with play area. The bad news are - waited for 15 mins for the girl to take our order and when we got our breakfast, one of them was wrong. After we finished, ordered an extra take away coffee (coffee is GOOD), but the coffee was send to a wrong table. Have seen some good reviews about the place, so will go back again, hopefully the second visit will change our view.

I love this cafe! I've been here twice now and both times, service has been impeccable. Yes, there are long queues, especially if you want to sit outside, but it's been worth the wait. The food itself is nice, nothing spectaculair, but overall a great cafe experience. Heard they're opening up a market soon - think it's the perfect venue for this, especially cause they have such a lovely veggie/herb garden, so looking forward to checking it out!

The Grounds offers a complete dining experience! Situated in busy Alexandria, the cafe is buzzing! I visited there on a Thursday morning and I didn't have to wait long for a table, however I have heard on the weekends it gets crazily busy! Our service wasn't the fastest or most friendly, however the food definitely made up for it! We tried the breakfast board (highly recommend) and the eggs covered in fried quinoa. Both were amazing! Coffee was yummy and the fresh orange juice hit the spot. Make sure you take a wonder in the beautiful garden or sit and have a take away amongst the herbs. Great decor and well worth a visit!

There was a long queue the day we had lunch here (on a weekday) - 20 odd people waiting to be seated, but wanting only a table for two, we had to wait only about 15 minutes.
The noise level inside was quite high, we certainly weren't able to just chat across the table - I found it uncomfortably noisy, but I'm aware I'm a bit more sensitive to noisy environments than most people.
The service was friendly, and the speed of service about what you'd expect, given that it was extremely busy.
Both of us ordered the beef burger, it was quite tasty, although I thought the burger itself was a little dry. My sister thought hers was great though, so a matter of opinion.
Probably the highlight was the ginger beer my sister ordered - it tasted exactly like the ginger beer we used to make at home when we were kids, and I suspect it was made on the premises - it was so good, I'd go back again just for that!
The prices were as expected - it was a few weeks ago and I don't remember precisely, but I think it was about $36 - $38 for two burgers and two drinks, so probably around $15 for,the burger.

Approximate cost: $15

Very Good review. Well written and spot on we go to this Caf, I didn't review as you see by the lines it popular enough. They do make ginger beer and lemonade themselves. And the best coffee in Alexandria.
Thank you for some good reading

Thought this was our best kept secret but even im having trouble getting a table on the weekend. which wont do. Well at least it keeps the food very fresh.

I had lunch here again last week (November 2013) and have to add this comment - my meal was great, I had the chicken burger. My niece had "smashed avocado" which also looked good - served on their "signature sourdough" (direct quote from the menu).
My sister had "Wagyu burger" on "our signature sourdough" (also verbatim from the menu) - the "burger" was actually a steak sandwich, and my main point - it was served on "charcoal bread" - which looked exactly as it sounds, precisely like charcoal!
My sister questioned it, and was assured, "just try it, I promise you'll love it!" She didn't love it, didn't eat much of it, and we actually got a copy of the menu back to double check.
When she pointed out that it wasn't listed on the menu, and was, in fact, described exactly the same as the perfectly normal sourdough bread her daughter was eating, they apologised and gave her a free dessert.
I tried the bread, didn't like it at all, and had it been served to me I would've sent it back immediately.
Apart from this, it's still a lovely venue, and I'd happily go back again. I'd just question the menu a bit more closely next time!
