I have to admit from the outset that I'm a local that has worked on the jetties, on & off, from 1991. That aside, I'll drive (taxi/train) past more than half a dozen pubs to go to The Lucky Shag, which I consider my local. The Swan River is a significant part of the Perth identity, dating back ... well a fair way. To sit over the water looking at the lights from South Perth & the CBD of an evening enjoying a frothy (from a large selection), a vino or whatever, is something that a vast amount of tourists, workers & locals get to enjoy. The food is "pub grub", honest & plentiful, devoid of pretention or embellishments. Entertainment, the local riffraff aside, is unobtrusive and at times sublime (check out Howie Morgan on a Wednesday night). Prices as compared to over East or overseas are more expensive, but at the end of the day you're over the Swan with friends or family chilling out & relaxing. They will, during the summer months, with drunken punters rolling off the boats get fairly selective with who they let thru the doors. But that's to be expected, they're just looking after the patrons who are already their & enjoying the laid back vibe.

Having been away from Perth for more than 4 years I thought I would visit the Luck Shag when visiting Perth recently and see if it had changed.

It had changed a little, they have put glass up around the railings facing the water which is a good move as there can be quite a mean wind coming off the Swan at times.

The atmosphere was as great as it had ever been but not quite as busy as I remember. Probably people having Christmas parties. This place can get packed during the week (people from the CBD).

The views are wonderful, plenty of choices of beverage ranging from the connoisseur to the good old reliables. They have a wide range of food options which is more along the lines of pub meals but slightly lifted from that. I didn't try the food but it looked plentiful and edible.

The prices I can only assume must be in line with Perth but coming from Cairns, I nearly fell over when I bought the first 2 beers!

This place is a must for locals and visitors, just behind the pub is the Swan Bell Tower which is worth a look too.

Great place for an after work drink on a Friday, the have an good range of beers but you really can't beat the view and relaxation right there on the Swan River. As with anywhere in the city the parking can be a bit of a nightmare so better if you're catching the train or can walk etc. Have been quite a few times, especially when I used to work just around the corner.

Very nice place on the river in Barrack Square - you can even dock your boat at the pub! Good range of decent beers and friendly staff & patrons.. all at decent prices (for Perth anyway)

Attempted to enter the lucky shag at 9:30pm on a Saturday night to be told they were in "Lock Down" when asked an explination they said they were closing at 10pm. 10pm on a saturday night!!!
We had been for dinner at Barrack Street and thought we would grab a quick drink, very disappointing that they have a website that they unfortunately don't keep up to date. We won't waste our time in future and will not return to try The Lucky Shag out.
