5 reviews about The Town Fryer

This little fish and chip shop is sort of tucked away up a small street on the lead up to Gem Pier in Williamstown, Syme St and it's bordered by the lovely and leafy Commonwealth Reserve. So the historic and scenic atmosphere is great.

But the place itself is a touch hard to find. You go around the side of the Custom's house to a sort of covered doorway/passage which leads to the actual shop part and then continue on through to a hidden internal courtyard where there are chairs and tables and you can sit to enjoy your fish and chip meal if you desire. This backs on to another restaurant garden area with a sort of pathway in between.

It's the old raffleticket number system - so don't miss your call or you have to go back and ask. There's a drink fridge with limited choices and usually there's a queue in here because it's in the "Tourist Precinct", so buy your drinks when you order and pay for your fish or you'll be in the queue again.

I enjoyed our meal of fried flake, chips and potato cakes with some dim sims, but I can't say it was THE best ever. Very nice though and the grilled flake was done to perfection.

I think one could eat one's way across Williamstown using the large number of fish shops there are. LOL

After ward you can stroll through the park or go and visit the war ship on Gem Pier.

Approximate cost: $10.00? about

Pretty good fish and chippery but far from the best in Willy. Definitely on the pricey side though, which isn't entirely justified? Fish was good but the range offered isn't extensive. Best thing about it is the location - right across from Commonwealth reserve.

I have eaten only once at this fish and chippery and found it to be delicious and well cooked.

I ordered fried flake and chips (I know its nothing fancy) but nonetheless I was pleased to find it crispy and well battered the fish.

I was there on a weekend during the day and it was busy, which I did not mind waiting, as my order was cooked on the spot.

I would be happy to go there again!

I found choice of fish to be very limiting. The only fish on offer seemed to be a very thin piece of Flake at $5 a serve. Chips were served from bain marie and were cold upon receipt. Dim sims were those from Sth Melbourne market (too meaty for me). No other dim sims on offer, although when The town Fryer runs out of the Sth Melb market dim sims they do offer traditonal dim sims but do not reduce for smaller product (we paid same price as bigger dim sims). Calamari seemed to be the crumbed Fish Surimi product.

Location is great as it is right next to the park and pier. Good fish and chip shop for tourists that don't want to travel far. (Note: Wasn't aware of fish and chip value offer and staff did not bring this to attention)

Approximate cost: $14

i have been to The town Fryer on several occasions and have always found the food to be excellent.
i was there the other day and they were out of the South Melb dim sims and did have the traditional ones at a reduced price of 80 cents. Also the catch of the day and chips pack for $6 is great value
